Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy was a testament to the superhero genre, and arguably, cinema in general. The Dark Knight is still widely considered the best Batman film of all time, and a stunning example of what genre movies are capable of — and even influenced how the Academy Awards picked its Best Picture line-up.
Their impact is thanks, in no small part, to Nolan’s adherence to film stock over digital photography. All of Nolan’s films, from The Prestige to Inception, to even Interstellar, have a steadfast, classic quality because of Nolan’s insistence on using 35mm (and sometimes larger) film. But even though he is a traditionalist, Nolan is still open and encouraging of new technologies. You can see it in his embrace of IMAX technology for his action sequences and his newest film Dunkirk. And soon, you can see it in the 4K remaster of his previous films, including The Dark Knight trilogy.

For as many fans as Christopher Nolan has, he has plenty of detractors as well. Who knew some were so closely tied into him, though. In a new interview Christopher Priest, who wrote the novel The Prestige which Nolan adapted, had lots to say about the director and his movies. First of all, he does like The Prestige as a movie but admits the two only met when Nolan finished the film. Since though though, Priest thinks Nolan has gone downhill, going so far as to call his Dark Knight Trilogy “boring and pretentious.” And that’s just part of it. Outside of Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance, arguably the most iconic addition to the Batman universe thanks to Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight Trilogy was the Tumbler. The way Nolan created a functional, realistic Batmobile and continued to evolve it over the course of three films was just beyond cool. It was one of those things fans and non-fans alike wanted to own when they walked out of the movie. And while The Dark Knight Tumbler has been available in various different ways, it’s finally getting an Ultimate Collector’s Edition Lego.
