In 2013, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling released a book called The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym “Robert Galbraith.” It was the first in a series of crime novels following the adventures of a private investigator named Cormoran Strike, a former member of the Royal Military Police, and now Cinemax has adapted the first three novels into a miniseries. It seems kind of appropriate that Cinderella should be getting a makeover, since the story itself hinges on a makeover. Disney is the fairy godmother in this case, wielding magic instead of CG and turning Cinderella from a 60-year-old animated feature into a brand-new live-action fantasy.
Of course, in Cinderella’s case the transformation undeniably changes her life for the better. It’s less clear why Cinderella really needed to be retold (aside from the obviou$), but at least this new version looks pretty. Hit the jump to watch the new Cinderella international trailer starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James, and Richard Madden. Read More »

Disney’s wave of live-action fairy tales continues next spring with Kenneth Branagh‘s Cinderella. Unlike Maleficent or Oz The Great and Powerful, however, Cinderella doesn’t come at the tale from a different character’s perspective. Instead, it looks like a pretty straightforward retelling of the classic story.
Lily James plays young Ella, Cate Blanchett her evil stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter her fairy godmother, and Richard Madden the handsome prince. Watch the first Cinderella trailer after the jump.

To be totally honest, we kinda forgot that Mike Newell‘s Great Expectations existed at all. Can you blame us? The project started casting two and a half years ago, released a trailer and got a TIFF premiere a year ago, and since then we’ve heard next to nothing about it. But now it’s getting ready for a U.S. theatrical opening at long last, and distributor Main Street Films is eager to remind you of its charms with a brand-new trailer.
Jeremy Irvine leads the classic Charles Dickens tale as Pip, an orphan plucked out of poverty by a mysterious benefactor. He falls for beautiful but unattainable Estella (Holliday Grainger), the adopted daughter of bitter Miss Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter). Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, and Robbie Coltrane also star. Watch the video after the jump.

There are a handful of classic tales that seem to get reinterpreted for the screen every few years, and among them is Charles Dickens‘ Great Expectations. The most recent theatrical version you probably recall is Alfonso Cuarón’s 1998 modernized version featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Bancroft, and Ethan Hawke, and since then there have been at least two other adaptations for TV.
Now the latest director to tackle the Victorian coming-of-age tale is Mike Newell, who brings the story back to its original 19th century setting. Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) stars as Pip, a poor orphan boy whose life takes an unexpected twist when a mysterious benefactor arranges for him to become a gentleman. Up-and-comer Holliday Grainger stars as the unattainable object of his affections, Estella, while Helena Bonham Carter tackles the iconic role of spiteful shut-in Miss Havisham. In the past year there have been more than a few trailers for Bel Ami, the story set in late 1800s Paris in which Robert Pattinson plays a guy who sleeps and seduces his way into wealth. The film has played some festivals to middling reviews, but now that the first official US trailer has arrived, it’s worth having a look. The cast is appealing, at least, as Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Colm Meaney, Philip Glenister, and Holliday Grainger join Pattinson in the film directed by Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod.
