Sean Penn is returning to Ridgement High for a charity table read of the classic 1982 high school comedy that helped launch his career. But somehow, he won’t be playing his iconic teen slacker, Jeff Spicoli. Penn will, however, be joined by a star-studded cast for the Fast Times at Ridgemont High table read, including Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Shia LaBeouf, Matthew McConaughey, and Morgan Freeman, for a live virtual event that will benefit emergency relief nonprofit CORE’s work in the fight against COVID-19.

Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Poltergeist, The Road Warrior, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Tron, and that’s just the beginning. Yes, the Summer of 1982 was probably the best one in the history of movies and that’s why the Alamo Drafthouse is celebrating with a summer long, 30th anniversary celebration screening a slew of the most exciting films released that year. Plus, there’s now a significant update jumping off last month’s announcement.
Tickets for the first screening, Conan the Barbarian, go on sale Tuesday morning along with a limited number of passes that’ll get you into eight of the screenings. Second, the series has expanded significantly, adding films such as The Dark Crystal, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Vice Squad, The Secret of Nimh, Friday the 13th Part 3, Q: The Winged Serpent, Pink Floyd: The Wall and more. Third, Blade Runner will not be screened (bummer).
And finally, in accordance with the /Film sponsored screening of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial on June 8 (tickets on sale May 25) we’re proud to exclusively debut the Mondo poster for the film by artist Dan McCarthy. Check out the poster, the important links, full lineup and more after the jump. Read More »
Subtonix decided to create a map of the United States by pinpointing the movies which best represent each of the 50 states. For example, New Jersey is Clerks and Kansas is The Wizard of Oz. There will likely be some debate over some of these choices (is Fast Times at Ridgemont High the ultimate representation of California?) but it is an interesting concept none the less. It’s also interesting to note that more Coen Brothers films appear on the map than any other filmmaker. Hit the jump to see the whole map, and click to enlarge.

Before you ditch that crummy summer job and toss your cheesy pirate uniform and fish sticks out the window, borrow some $10s from the register and treat yourself to something nice. Like, say, this new tee from NYC’s Acapulco Gold, which salutes talented actress Phoebe Cates and the wet-hottest moment in ’80s teen cinema. Printed on 100% cotton and made in the USA, part of us—guess the part—wishes the print ran a second longer.
The shirt is available directly from AG or at Turntable Lab in classic black, white, or red, men’s sizes medium to X-large. For the purpose of this article, /Film received the red one. Here’s a review: Looks great in a bathroom mirror. Too great. Pics of each color after the jump. And I’ve attached the little seen intro to Fast Times, the failed Fast Times at Ridgemont High TV series starring Patrick Dempsey and Ski School‘s affable Dean Cameron as Spicoli.
