Overnight, our friends across the pond announced the 2019 BAFTA nominations, the equivalent of the Academy Awards in the United Kingdom honoring the preceding year in film. It should come as no surprise that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts was more than ready to show plenty of love for The Favourite, a truly British film in every sense of the word. The film led the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and nods for Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for their incredible performances.

The Director’s Guild of America has chimed in with their nominations for their annual awards honoring the finest achievements in directing in film and television for the year 2018. Much like his nomination for the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, it should come as no surprise that Roma director Alfonso Cuarón ended up with a nomination, especially after winning Best Director at the Golden Globes last weekend. Green Book won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay at last night’s awards show, and that particular train seems like it’s going to continue chugging all the way to the Oscars. Peter Farrelly’s film starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen is one of several 2019 WGA Award nominees, joining films like A Quiet Place, Roma, Eighth Grade, and Vice as contenders for the Writers Guild trophy.

While most of 2018 has brought pure madness around the world, we can take solace in the fact that this year also brought us plenty of great movies. Though I’ll admit that I didn’t see nearly as many as I wanted, I still found myself wowed over and over again by a wide variety of cinema, from some of the year’s biggest blockbusters to the most beautiful, elegant dramas.

Since 2010, the movie that won the Producers Guild of America award for best picture also went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars six out of eight times. (Only La La Land, The Big Short, and Gravity didn’t take home the top statue at both ceremonies; Gravity shared the PGA prize with eventual Oscar champ 12 Years a Slave in 2013.) That impressive prediction percentage means that folks who care about award season are very interested in which film takes home the PGA prize this year.

It’s only been a few days since the members of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society released the nominees for their annual awards, and the winners have already been determined. However, don’t expect this to be an indication of how any of the major awards are going to go down later this season. Our editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is counted among this group, and the wide array of film critics from various backgrounds makes the results skew much further from the norm than you might expect at the Golden Globes or Oscars.
