David Ellison and Skydance Productions have turned into the go-to financing partner for Paramount. The company put up money for True Grit and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and will be behind the Jack Ryan reboot and the sequel to Top Gun if that film goes forward.

Christopher McQuarrie will add the script for that Top Gun sequel to his resume that already includes The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie. And now Skydance is negotiating to buy the rights to classic anime series Star Blazers, and will turn to Mr. McQuarrie to craft the script for a live-action version . Read More »

Movie Trailer: Space Battleship Yamato


Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, the Always films) has been working for a while on Space Battleship Yamato, aka the live-action remake of the anime that was released as Star Blazers in the US. We saw a teaser trailer in January that suggested a great deal about how the film would look, even as it declined to reveal too much about the film’s effects.

Now there’s a full trailer that really opens the floodgates and shows just how huge the scope of this adaptation might be. This footage looks fantastic, and is certainly way beyond what I expected to see out of the movie. Read More »

Space Battleship Yamato International Teaser


One of the most significant pieces of anime to come out of the ’70s was the Space Battleship Yamato series, broadcast in the States as Star Blazers. The US broadcast paved the way for animated series that existed as connected story arcs, and the original three seasons spawned a set of animated films in Japan.  A live-action version of Space Battleship Yamato has been in the works for quite a while, and the film began shooting in October.
