The Bad Batch is a vibrant and surreal western with a quiet drifter (Suki Waterhouse), a towering but sensitive cannibal (Jason Momoa), a mute savior (Jim Carrey), and a mysterious leader called the Dream (Keanu Reeves). Ana Lily Amirpour‘s film mixes death and loss, psychedelia and body builders, to tell a story that’s certainly original. Amirpour’s follow-up to her breakout debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, feels like a completely new body built with a few old spare parts.
The writer-director’s sophomore effort has a kind of freewheeling, acid-induced flow to it – shots are bursting with color and life. Amirpour told us about imagining some of these frames along with creating the world, Arlen and Miami Man, and the music from The Bad Batch.

Ana Lily Amirpour‘s debut feature, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, felt simultaneously fresh and familiar: it borrowed from the iconography of several decades’ worth of cinema, but it combined those elements in a way we’d never quite seen before. Her sophomore effort, The Bad Batch, looks every bit as attention-grabbing. Suki Waterhouse and Jason Momoa star as two very different people whose paths collide in a dusty dystopia overrun by cannibals, while Keanu Reeves shows up late in the game as a charismatic cult leader.
If that description doesn’t pique your interest, I can’t help you — this movie might just be Not Your Thing. Two years ago, Ana Lily Amirpour came seemingly out of nowhere with her singular first feature, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. The black-and-white feminist Iranian vampire Western felt like nothing we’d seen before — heck, just the description “black-and-white feminist Iranian vampire Western” sounds like nothing we’ve seen before. Now all eyes are on her as she debuts her second film, The Bad Batch.
In concept and style, The Bad Batch is every bit as dazzlingly unique as Amirpour’s last film. It’s set in a dusty dystopian landscape that looks like Venice Beach by way of Mad Max, with some Burning Man and Electric Daisy Carnival thrown in for good measure. Our main characters are Miami Man, a hulking cannibal played by Jason Momoa, and Arlen, a tough bit of prey played by Suki Waterhouse, and the story follows their unexpected collision. But despite a promising start, The Bad Batch runs out of gas about halfway through, and spends the rest of its time meandering through a halfhearted narrative. Read More »

With summer blockbuster season behind us and fall festival season in full swing, we’re starting to get a peek at some of the more offbeat entertainments coming up on the horizon. When talking about A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night last year, I said that director Ana Lily Amirpour is someone we’re excited to watch going forward. And we’re evidently not the only ones with confidence in her work. Her next film, The Bad Batch, is backed by Megan Ellison and Annapurna Productions, which immediately puts Amirpour in great company. The film already had Jason Momoa as a core member of the cast. The Bad Batch is the new project from A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night director Ana Lily Amirpour, backed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Productions and VICE. That’s a good combo right there. Now Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Batman v Superman) has been announced as being in talks for a major role, and with that announcement come some new script details.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a stylish and moody feature debut from very promising writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour. In this film, Amirpour combines a hearty set of influences — Iranian culture, Westerns, rock and roll films, and horror icons — to create a unique take on the vampire genre. It’s a sultry and compelling film, with all the energy of the late ’80s and early ’90s independent scene but a personality that isn’t quite like any of the influences it draws from. There’s an implied threat in the title of the film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Those words together suggest menace and victimization. An image forms, not of a woman out for an enjoyable stroll, but of one who might not make it home.
A reversal of that threat is the core of this vampire film written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. Luminescent black and white photography buttresses a very spare approach to story. Into the tale are woven supernatural tropes, and elements of westerns and ’50s rebel movies. Shot in California but set in Iran, with dialogue in Farsi, the film’s images and characters are a collision of Iranian and American cultures, specifically with respect to social politics of sex and gender. This is an inversion of classic horror, because it is not about victimization of the person described in the title, but rather that person’s retaliation against forces that seek to dominate and subjugate.
