Top Gun 2 has defied the odds, and after decades of hype and promise, the adrenaline-fueled sequel is finally in production. Tom Cruise posted a photo from the set last week, and barring some kind of insurmountable obstacle, the movie titled Top Gun: Maverick will be on the big screen for the summer of 2019. And when it arrives, it may have a new version of the signature rock song that made all the high-flying jet sequences that much more memorable.
When the original Top Gun was released in 1986, it was accompanied by the quintessential rock song of that decade: “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. Screenwriter Justin Marks appeared on a Television Critics Association panel for his Starz series Counterpart (which we’ll have more about in the coming weeks), but afterwards, we got the chance to ask about the screenplay for Top Gun: Maverick, of which Marks wrote an early draft.

Before his death in 2012, director Tony Scott promised Top Gun 2 would be “a very different movie” from the 1986 original and hinted at the idea of involving drones in the high-flying sequel. In the subsequent years, the project has undergone numerous rewrites – so much so that it seems the drone idea has been scrapped altogether.
And speaking of a director with the last name of Scott, Ridley Scott – Tony’s brother – recently spoke about his plans for the still-untitled follow-up to Alien: Covenant and how it’s going to center more on artificial intelligence characters than the actual aliens themselves. Since a sequel to Top Gun has been in development for years, we won’t really believe it’s happening until the cameras are rolling. But for now, with director Joseph Kosinski set to direct the film with a July 2019 release date, this is the closest Top Gun 2 has ever been to becoming a reality.
Recently, there has been some concern from Paramount Pictures as to whether or not production on Top Gun: Maverick would be able to begin on time. Top Gun is coming back to theaters with a sequel, which means the return of Tom Cruise as Maverick, the (hopeful) return of latent homoeroticism, and maybe the return of Val Kilmer‘s Iceman. At least, Kilmer says he’s ready to reprise his role for Top Gun 2.
The sequel to 1986’s Top Gun was re-confirmed by Cruise earlier this week, and while a cast and director have not yet been announced, Cruise has said that he’ll begin filming “sometime next year.” So with details for Top Gun 2 in the dark, Kilmer took to social media to make his appeal for Iceman’s return to Cruise.
