In all of the reviews I’ve read for Darren Aronofsky‘s Black Swan, one thing that is often overlooked is the production design of the film. I was on set for a couple scenes filmed in Natalie Portman’s character Nina’s apartment, and was blown away by not only how real the environment felt, but how much symbolic imagery had been designed into the rooms.
Fox Searchlight has premiered a new four minute featurette focusing on the production design of the film on InContention, with design mastermind Thérèse DePrez providing a little insight into the look of the locations. Watch the video embedded after the jump.
Unfortunately, the video is one of the short studio produced glossy featurettes and doesn’t delve into the subject in much detail. I would have loved to see DePrez give a video tour of some of the locations (like the aforementioned apartment) and provide insight into some of the more metaphoric design inspirations.
