One of the big surprises of this awards season so far has been Deadpool‘s emergence as the scrappy little superhero movie that could. While its Golden Globe nomination wasn’t entirely unexpected, its Writers Guild nomination raised a few eyebrows. And now the Merc’s managed to wrangle himself a Producers Guild nomination as well.
Otherwise, it’s business as usual for the PGA nominations, which also went to favorites like La La Land and Moonlight. See the full list of 2017 PGA nominations below. Read More »
As of now, Illumination Entertainment’s animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets is sitting at #3 on the domestic list of the highest grossing movies of 2016. That’s not likely to last once Rogue One: A Star Wars Story storms the charts, but with a worldwide box office total over $874 million, the movie is still a hit. That’s a shame, because it’s not good.
I’ve already lamented in my full review just how disappointing this movie is, despite the fact that kids love it, and now Honest Trailers takes some jabs at the movie that are right on the money. They start by saying the movie is like Toy Story, but with out all the toys, heart, humor or story structure, and that’s being nice.

One of the few unqualified success stories to emerge from the barren wasteland that was this summer’s box office was The Secret Life of Pets. The animated adventure by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment has earned over $400 worldwide, with several big markets still to go, and was even warmly received by critics to boot. (Well, our own Ethan Anderton excepted.)
Naturally, that means the companies want to cuddle up to Duke and Max and Gidget again. As we’ve basically assumed all along, Universal and Illumination are planning a Secret Life of Pets sequel, and now they’ve even set a date. Read More »
Pixar Animation has set the bar pretty high when it comes to storytelling for the whole family. Their movies consistently have interesting, funny characters that have undeniable chemistry, and the story comes with a heart full of a myriad of emotions. Meanwhile, Illumination Entertainment seems to be more focused on just making kids laugh rather than telling a story with substance. It’s not that an animated movie can’t have childish humor, but when a movie like The Secret Life of Pets essentially links a series of wacky animals and vignettes together without effectively making you care about the characters, then we have a problem.

Super Bowl spots never come cheap, but this year they cost more than ever: up to $5 million for a 30-second spot, according to reports. Which means the studios have to bring it to make sure that steep price tag is worth it — and bring it they did.
This year’s batch included our very first peek at the newly titled Jason Bourne, another look inside the mysterious 10 Cloverfield Lane, a glimpse of Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, some clever not-quite promos for Batman v Superman, plus trailers for Independence Day: Resurgence, X-Men: Apocalypse, and much more. Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets promises to reveal just what these creatures get up to when we’re not around, and the answers so far have ranged from obvious (eating human food they aren’t supposed to) to shocking (headbanging to heavy metal). Now the latest trailer starts to shape those cute little secrets into an actual story.
Louis C.K. voices Max, a terrier living in New York City. He loves life with his owner Katie (Ellie Kemper), and is dismayed when she brings home a new “brother” for Max, a big sloppy mutt named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). One thing leads to another, and before they know it Max and Duke find themselves caught up in an army of abandoned pets led by a bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart). Everyone claims to know their pets — their likes, their dislikes, their habits and personality quirks — but do we really? Or are we just projecting our own ideas and preferences onto a bunch of unamused creatures? Universal’s upcoming The Secret Life of Pets posits that there’s a lot more to these animals than we might suspect. Maybe they have feelings we don’t understand. Maybe they actually get up to all kinds of forbidden mischief while we’re out. Maybe they’re quietly plotting to get their revenge on us, the unsuspecting suckers.
The latest The Secret Life of Pets teaser helps us get to know, really know, one of these pets, a bunny named Snowball voiced by Kevin Hart (who, as we’ve already discussed, is Universal’s favorite star this year). Watch it after the jump. Read More »
