Update: Since 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hurricane Florence has dropped to a Category 3 storm.
With a Category 4 storm descending on south-eastern and mid-Atlantic states, going to the movies probably isn’t the first thing on people’s minds. And movie theater chains have that same thought.
AMC, Regal and other theater chains are set to shutter 50-60 locations over the next few days depending on the intensity of Hurricane Florence. And while the top priority for everyone in the region is to stay safe (our thoughts are with the readers and /Film writers in the area), it’s our job to talk about movie news. So: how is Hurricane Florence expected to affect this weekend’s box office returns and how are theater chains and studios preparing?

We’re just one weekend into September, but audiences seem hungry for some Halloween scares with The Conjuring spin-off The Nun topping the box office with a huge debut.
Despite having a 28% at Rotten Tomatoes, the horror crowd couldn’t help but be curious about the demon Valak this weekend. The Nun rounded up $53.3 million from 3,876 locations, landing the best debut in the entire Conjuring franchise, surpassing the previous placeholder of the original The Conjuring, which earned $41.8 for its opening weekend back in 2013. And that’s not the only milestone The Nun scared up for the horror franchise. Read More »
There’s a moment in The Nun when I thought I had it all figured out. It’s when Father Burke (Demian Bichir), the priest sent from the Vatican to investigate the mysterious death of a nun in 1952 Romania, falls and is subsequently trapped inside an open coffin while following behind an ominous presence outside at night. It’s because he comes this close to being yanked deeper into the ground by the creepy phantom fingers of a rabid demonic nun while inside the box. He’s a priest. He shouldn’t be so susceptible to demonic presences, right?
That is, unless this latest installment in the Conjuring series went the way of an early example of modern religious horror — The Exorcist. That 1973 classic also follows a priest sent from the Vatican to investigate a demonic presence, in that case one that overtakes a young girl, and is so terrified by the sight that he drops his Bible right out of his hands. I figured that, like what happens in the William Friedkin-directed film, The Nun would reveal that Father Burke had been struggling with his faith, which effectively leads him to become prey for demonization. I was wrong.

Screenwriter Gary Dauberman joined the Conjuring franchise with the very first Annabelle spin-off, and has written every spin-off since including Annabelle: Creation and this week’s The Nun. In between, he had time to write It: Chapter One and then adapted the rest of the Stephen King novel for It: Chapter Two. He also wrote the Swamp Thing series for the DC Universe streaming service and an adaptation of the Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark?
The Nun tells the origin of the demonic spirit the Warrens faced in The Conjuring 2. This spin-off takes us back to 1952 in a remote convent in Romania. Father Kirk (Demian Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) visit the abbey to investigate a nun’s suicide. Spoiler alert: it’s related to The Nun.
Dauberman spoke with /Film by phone about The Nun and its place in the continuing Conjuring universe, as well as his upcoming projects for film and television.

This weekend brings The Nun to theaters, adding another origin story to one of the horrors from the Conjuring universe. However, fans looking for any proper explanation as to where this demonic woman of the clergy comes from may walk away disappointed. Instead, you’ll be treated to 90 minutes of jump scares and a lot of smoke and mirrors. If that’s exactly what you’re looking for from director Corin Hardy and the Conjuring universe, then you’ll be fine. But otherwise, The Nun reviews paint this as a hollow, disappointing entry in the franchise. Read More »
When The Conjuring was released in 2013, few people expected it to launch a whole cinematic universe with its own mythology and crossover characters. A sequel or two, maybe, as hit horror films are expected to make. But one that could rival the superhero universes? Blasphemy.
But eight years later and we’re four films into a Conjuring cinematic universe, with even more to come in the future. And the latest The Nun featurette takes us back to the beginning.

Update: YouTube has officially pulled the ad for violating its “shocking content” policy. We’ve added their response below.
I vividly remember being in my college dorm room and being tricked into watching a viral video of a car cruising through a lush, green countryside. Soft flute music plays in the background, and a few seconds in, a guy in zombie makeup bursts up in front of the camera and screams. That was in 2006, just a year after YouTube launched, and now a new ad for Warner Bros.’ upcoming horror film The Nun is using a similar technique to promote the movie.
Is using a jump scare tactic like this irresponsible of the studio, a case of savvy marketing, or maybe a bit of both? Check out the ad and judge for yourselves below.
