The Matrix 4 Cinematographer John Toll

The surprise news of a fourth installment of The Matrix franchise was only just revealed earlier this week, seemingly timed to the 20th anniversary of the original movie’s release. But it sounds like this project has been in the works for awhile, because some key crew members are already being recruited for the production.

Hot on the heels of The Matrix‘s original concept artists returning for the new sequel, we have word that The Matrix 4 has hired cinematographer John Toll (above left), who won back-to-back Oscars for his work on Legends of the Fall in 1994 and Braveheart in 1995. Read More »

But the big question of the moment is: Can The Matrix 4 recapture what made that world so stunningly realized in the first place? With Darrow and Skroce confirmed to return as the concept artists for The Matrix 4, it certainly looks like it could.

The Matrix turned 20 years old this year and here’s one way to celebrate: Warner Bros. has announced that The Matrix 4 is officially in the works. After years of rumors and tales of reboots and a revolving door of talented folks all taking a crack at this iconic and mind-bending universe, the new film will return to where it all began. Keanu Reeves will return as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Trinity, and Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote and co-directed the original trilogy with her sister Lilly, will co-write, produce, and direct.
