Back in 2019, Netflix picked up the big screen adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division, the video game franchise from Ubisoft. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain are attached to star and produce, and Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch was slated to be at the helm of the action-thriller. Video game movies haven’t had much luck on the big screen – so maybe Netflix is the solution. At least that’s what Ubisoft is hoping, as The Division movie, based on the Tom Clancy online video game, heads to the streaming service. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain have been attached to the project for a while now, and will remain the stars for the Netflix film. Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch is set to direct.

Every few years, another movie threatens to finally end the dreaded video game curse. And every few years, we end up disappointed again. But maybe, just maybe, The Division will be the project that finally delivers what has eluded Hollywood for so long: a good video game adaptation.
First, a couple of Oscar-nominated actors joined the cast. Now, a sure-handed filmmaker with the quite the action pedigree has stepped behind the camera: David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde.

Nobody outside of Netflix knows exactly how many people watch anything on everyone’s default streaming service, but the numbers are high enough for everyone involved to keep investing in original shows and movies. They’re also large enough to attract major talents. Netflix is responsible for an upcoming Will Smith movie. A Will Smith movie!
Which brings us to today’s little morsel of news: Ubisoft, the video game publisher responsible for its fair share of popular titles, is looking to get into the Netflix business. Last month, Jake Gyllenhaal signed on for an adaptation of the Ubisoft video game The Division, despite the fact that his last attempt to bring a video game to the big screen didn’t go very well. But hey, he could have better luck this time. Especially now that he’s got a very capable co-star to help him out. Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t fare very well with the big screen adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game Prince of Persia, but that’s not stopping him from teaming with the video game company for another movie based on one of their recently popular titles. Tom Clancy’s The Division is getting turned into a movie, and Gyllenhaal is attached to lead the film.
