Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?
This week we go retro with our comedy, write a few movie reviews, revisit what happened in 2016 to this nation, see what Robert Downey Jr. is up to, and find our newest guilty pleasure.

(Welcome to Movie Mixtape, where we find cinematic relatives and seek out interesting connections between new releases and older movies that allow us to rethink and enjoy what’s in our theaters as well as the favorites on our shelf. In this edition: James Ponsoldt’s The Circle.)
So far on Movie Mixtape, we’ve danced with a beast and tangoed with Scarlett Johansson’s ghost, and now we’re dipping our toes in a dystopia that feels a bit closer to our home screens.
Based on the Dave Eggers novel, The Circle sees entry-level tech employee Mae Holland (Emma Watson) swimming through the hipster-bait open office of a Hooli-esque search engine company. Her life perks up as she rises through the ranks of the company, but success is a matter of compromising. Mae has to trade away something that most of us trade away everyday by using Facebook and Twitter and Instagram: her private life. At the heart of the company is its rock star founder Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks) who wants to help society by making it more open and free.
Yes, the whole thing is one big trigger for introverts. It’s also a case of too-good-to-be-true revealing its price tag.

As evidenced by the popularity of Black Mirror, feeling uneasy about technology is just part and parcel of life in the developed world in 2017. Who among us hasn’t felt a twinge of anxiety about where our Facebook photos or Twitter posts could end up, or worried that someone could be watching through our built-in laptop cameras? We fret a bit, and then we keep sharing and posting and liking things anyway. Because what else are you going to do? Just not be a part of modern society?
In The Circle, that stress gets taken to a whole other level when a bright young woman named Mae (Emma Watson) is hired by a powerful tech company that looks a bit like Google, Facebook, and Apple all rolled into one. At first, it seems like a warm and welcoming place with a tight-knit corporate culture — but pretty soon, she starts to see the true cost of ultimate transparency. Tom Hanks plays the company’s founder, and John Boyega a mysterious colleague. Watch The Circle trailer below. Read More »
The first weekend of theatrical releases in 2017 arrives in just a couple days, but since it’s January, we’re still getting rollover from awards season mixed with garbage that doesn’t deserve a release date at any other time. So we’re already looking forward to some of the more exciting movie releases coming this year, and the movies that I’m looking forward to the most range from blockbuster sequels to movies from filmmakers who haven’t delivered a new film in a few years.

After Emma Watson meets up with her beastly prince and before John Boyega jets off to galaxy far, far away, the pair will be meeting up in The Circle. Directed by James Ponsoldt and based on the novel by Dave Eggers, the techno-thriller stars Watson and Boyega as employees of a wildly successful tech company run by a charismatic founder (played by Tom Hanks). The Circle promises a seamless existence guided by transparency and civility — all you have to do is give over all your personal information, and maybe start using one of the company’s ubiquitous SeeChange cameras. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
For a couple years after Attack the Block we expected to see John Boyega getting great roles, but it took a bit of time.
