Clifford

Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a new series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Movie: Clifford

Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max

The Pitch: Smart, hyperactive and dangerous 10-year-old Clifford (Martin Short) has a lifelong dream: to visit the Dinosaur World theme park, no matter what it takes to get there. Luckily, his Uncle Martin (Charles Grodin) has agreed to take him in an effort to impress his girlfriend who doesn’t believe he has any desire to have kids. But when Martin suddenly reneges on his promise, Clifford hatches a devious plan to get even and teach his uncle a lesson.

Why It’s Essential Viewing: Clifford was a critical and box office failure, making only $7.4 million and earning a half-star review from Roger Ebert. What else would you expect from a film that sat on a shelf for a few years when Orion Pictures was in rough financial waters? But for me, Clifford is an obnoxious, oddball comedy that works better than most give it credit for, and it’s all because of how Charles Grodin and Martin Short make such fantastic foils for each other. So it must take something good to bring them back in front of the cameras together. Martin and Short star opposite Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building, a new mystery-comedy series coming from Hulu. Watch the Only Murders in the Building trailer below.

Father of the Bride Reunion Special

Father of the Bride is one of the most wonderful family comedies out there. Much of that is thanks to the undeniable chemistry and charm of Steve Martin and Diane Keaton as George and Nina Banks, and especially the comedic antics of the former as he deals with his daughter Annie’s (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) impending marriage. Plus, let’s not forget Martin Short‘s scene-stealing work as wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer. If you love the remake of the 1950 classic as much as I do, then we have some exciting news.

Netflix is hosting some kind of Father of the Bride reunion special this Friday to help benefit World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit organization founded by chef José Andrés devoted to providing meals in the wake of natural disasters. There’s even a little teaser that might give us some idea of what to expect. Read More »

Saturday Night Live At Home

Saturday Night Live concluding the 45th season this weekend is a little more bittersweet than usual. That’s because the late night sketch show was forced to wrap up with three editions of the remotely produced Saturday Night Live At Home, featuring all of the cast members doing sketches from the homes they’ve holed up in during quarantine. Thankfully, what will hopefully be the final edition of the show in this format was the best one yet, and it brought an array of guest stars, including Kristen Wiig as host, and dreams of getting back to normal once this pandemic is all over

So let’s take a look at the best and worst Saturday Night Live At Home sketches for (hopefully) one last time. Read More »
