After playing the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival this month, Alexander Payne‘s latest film Downsizing has debuted a full theatrical trailer, giving us a glimpse at the director’s first sci-fi film as only he can deliver.
Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig star in the film as a couple who decide to abandon their lives in the normal-sized world in the innovative and planet-saving “downsized” community of Leisureland, New Mexico, a society created in the future to deal with overpopulation of the world. Director Alexander Payne has brought us plenty of outstanding quirky dramatic comedies, ranging from the dark laughs in Election to the family struggles of Nebraska with a little bit of cynical romance in-between with Sideways. Now he’s heading into sci-fi territory with his latest film, and the first teaser has arrived online.
Downsizing takes place in a future where scientists have figured out how to shrink humans down to about five inches tall as a way to deal with the overpopulation of the planet. Smaller societies mean less space required, and Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig are ready to embark on a new life as tiny people. Get your first look at the little civilization and the rest of the cast in the Downsizing teaser below. Read More »
The premise of Colossal is so wacky and refreshing that every minute of it surprises you. A woman moves back to her hometown after breaking up with her boyfriend, and finds that she is somehow psychically linked to a giant monster wreaking havoc in Seoul. How it would follow up on such a unique premise? I admit I wondered that going into the film, but it delivered. And it worked so wonderfully because I had virtually no knowledge of the film going in — the marketing up until then had been ingeniously discrete and mysterious.
That may change for those who haven’t seen Colossal yet, with the newest trailer released for the Anne Hathaway film. Don’t read further if you don’t want spoilers.

Giant monster movies have been around for a long time, and so have indie movies about thirtysomethings trying to get their life together. Somehow, one movie has managed to combine both of those subgenres into a single movie that is refreshing, entertaining and positively great.
Colossal follows Anne Hathaway as a young socialite who isn’t doing anything valuable with her life. She’s just drinking the night away with her friends, and her boyfriend (Dan Stevens) is sick of it. So he kicks her out of his apartment, and she heads back to her hometown in a sad attempt to sort her life out. There she reconnects with an old school friend (Jason Sudeikis), and it seems like it’s just like any other indie movie. But then Hathaway discovers that she is somehow tied to a mysterious giant monster who has been appearing in South Korea and is perplexing people as it wreaks havoc.

Even if you’re a monster movie aficionado, it’s likely you’ve never seen one quite like Nacho Vigalondo‘s Colossal. Anne Hathaway stars as Gloria, whose charm helps paper over the fact that she’s a total mess. Unemployed and freshly single, she moves back to her hometown and reconnects with an old friend (Jason Sudeikis) who becomes her new drinking buddy.
So far, it sounds like just another quarter-life crisis indie dramedy, right? But Gloria, it turns out, shares a mysterious connection to a giant monster that’s been rampaging through Seoul. As the truth of the situation dawns on her, Gloria must figure out how to stop it from spiraling completely out of control. Watch the Colossal teaser below. Read More »
As we get closer to the end of the year, we’re starting to get trailers for movies that are getting unceremoniously dumped in January so as to have little to no competition with early spring blockbusters, the prime summer tentpoles or the previous month’s awards contenders. One of those is a new comedy that played at Tribeca under the title The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea, but now it has a new title and a telling release date.
The Book of Love has a promising cast featuring Jason Sudeikis and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams in the story of a widower who sets out to help a young homeless girl build a vessel so she can literally set sail on a metaphorical new path for her life.

Following last week’s episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Dave Chappelle wasn’t going to be an easy task. It was easily the best episode of the season so far, but Lorne Michaels was smart enough to follow it up with someone SNL fans would be happy to see back on the mainstage of Studio 8H as host. Former SNL cast member Kristen Wiig returned as host for a second time, and since this was the Thanksgiving episode, there were a few surprise guest stars who stopped by to have some fun too. The result was a consistently funny episode, even if it wasn’t as raucously hilarious as last weekend’s episode. So let’s get down to it.
We recap the best and worst sketches from the Kristen Wiig hosted Saturday Night Live after the jump. Read More »

Movies about giant monsters descending upon cities are a common sight, as are movies about chronic screwups trying to get their lives back on track. But if a movie has ever combined those premises before, I haven’t seen it.
Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, Colossal stars Anne Hathaway as a hard-drinking, unemployed thirty-something who hits rock bottom when she gets dumped. But her messy life takes an even crazier turn when she realizes that she’s somehow connected to an enormous creature that’s begun terrorizing Seoul. It’s a bizarre conceit that works against all odds, anchored by strong performances from Hathaway as Gloria and Jason Sudeikis as Oscar, Gloria’s childhood friend. Read More »

Jared Hess‘ Masterminds centers on a real-life $17 million heist, but Ocean’s 11 or Inside Man this ain’t. Instead, the thieves behind the operation include an unassuming armored car driver played by Zach Galifianakis, his flirty co-worker played by Kristen Wiig, their not-very-brilliant mastermind played by Owen Wilson. Jason Sudeikis stars as a hitman, Kate McKinnon as Galifianakis’ wife, and Leslie Jones as the cop who’s out to get them all. Yep, this film stars three of the four new Ghostbusters. Last night the 41st season of Saturday Night Live came to a close by bringing former cast member Fred Armisen back to host the show for the first time. Usually when you get an SNL veteran coming back to host, that means some kind of reunion is in order and plenty of returning characters are paraded around. However, even though Fred Armisen did reprise one of his characters from his days on the show, this was mostly a night of original sketches. The good news is cast members like Maya Rudolph, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg came back to get in on the fun.
Check out our rundown of the Fred Armisen Saturday Night Live episode after the jump.
