Countless movies and television shows were forced to shut down indefinitely last month as the coronavirus pandemic started to become a larger concern across the globe. That means movies that were in production and had previously set release dates towards the end of the year and even through 2021 may not meet their expected deadlines. But when it comes to two forthcoming comic book blockbusters, their timeline might not be impacted at all.

Despite nearly a month passing since Disney’s firing of James Gunn, the status of the immensely popular Guardians of the Galaxy films remains a mystery. Marvel Studios has honed itself into a movie-making machine in the past decade, and a month without a director or writer is lost time and money for the company. But curiously, the House of Mouse has yet to announce a new director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even as Gunn reportedly fields tons of new offers from competing studios.

Even though the official numbers won’t be in until Monday morning, the estimates for the opening weekend for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the United States is around $145 million. That’s quite an improvement over the original’s $94.3 million opening weekend in 2014, giving it the largest jump in opening weekend box office for a sequel, coming in only behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And that means we’ll definitely be getting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as if there was any doubt.
