triple frontier review

Triple Frontier had a long, strange journey to the big (and in most cases, small) screen. Back in 2011, Kathryn Bigelow was set to direct, with Tom Hanks starring. By 2015, Bigelow was out, and J.C. Chandor was in. Chandor would spend the next several years with the project, with one big name after another being floated for potential cast members: Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum. At one point, the Affleck brothers – Ben and Casey – were being courted to star.

But the Afflecks eventually left, and Mark Wahlberg stepped in, while Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal also signed on. And then, in a last bit of weirdness, Wahlberg bailed, and Ben Affleck returned. Oscar Isaac joined as well, and at last, Chandor had his cast in place, and Netflix appeared on the scene to help get the movie made. Now, Triple Frontier opens in select theaters this week before dropping on Netflix next week. Was this frustrating path to the screen worth all the trouble? No…and yes.

triple frontier trailer

Triple Frontier‘s long road to the big screen is almost as fascinating as the film itself. The drug money heist thriller was in the works for years at Paramount Pictures with Katherine Bigelow set to helm the film. Then Netflix picked it up with Oscar-nominated A Most Violent Year director J.C. Chandor attached.

Meanwhile, the cast went through quite a revolving door of actors, with Johnny Depp and Mark Wahlberg at one point slated to lead, then Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum. But the while the coulda beens for this movie are intriguing, the finished product looks like a thrilling film with a cast that is arguably even better than all the past names. Oscar Isaac and Ben Affleck lead a star-studded cast including Charlie Hunman, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal, who star as a team of Special Forces operatives who use their special set of skills for personal gain, leading to dangerous consequences. See just what those consequences are with the newest Triple Frontier trailer below.

Triple Frontier Trailer

Do you remember Triple Frontier? The drug money heist thriller was in the works for years at Paramount Pictures with Zero Dark Thirty director Katherine Bigelow. Then it jumped to Netflix with Margin Call director J.C. Chandor at the helm, co-writing the script with Mark Boal, but it had a hard time holding onto a cast. Johnny Depp and Mark Wahlberg were both slated to lead the movie, and then Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum were part of the cast before they all fell away.

Odds be damned, Triple Frontier finally made it in front of cameras. It still has an impressive cast, with Ben Affleck leading a team of Special Forces operatives played by Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal, and the first trailer makes it look like one of the best Netflix original movies yet. Right now we’re in a bit of a dead zone for theatrical release,s with most movies released this month being neither good enough for a summer blockbuster release or hopeful enough for a debut during awards season. Mudbound review

Any movie should consider itself lucky to have an ensemble as good as the one anchoring Mudbound, which includes Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, and, most unexpectedly, Mary J. Blige. Directed by Dee Rees (whose debut feature Pariah was a breakout favorite at Sundance 2011), the drama follows two families — one black, one white — living on the same farm in the Mississippi Delta around the time of World War II.

The white McAllans own the property, despite the fact that household head Henry (Jason Clarke) is a Memphis gentleman who knows little about the land, and seemingly moved his family to the country on a whim. The Jacksons, on the other hand, have worked these acres for generations, for one white owner after another. Both clans are forever changed when World War II hits, and then again when the war ends and brings their loved ones back home.  Read More »

Mojave Tribeca review

We all know Oscar Isaac has the biggest film of his career coming up later this month in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But Isaac’s also got another, much smaller movie due for release in the coming weeks. Directed by William Monahan (The Departed), Mojave pits a devilish drifter played by Isaac against a depressed movie star played by Garrett Hedlund. Thrills, chills, and a whole lot of overwrought dialogue follow. Watch the first Mojave trailer after the jump.  Read More »
