The Funko POP collection of film and television directors being turned into collectible vinyl figurines has slowly been growing. But it’s only been full of a bunch of male filmmakers, ranging from Alfred Hitchcock in black and white from the set of Psycho to a tropical Taika Waititi decked out in pink and pineapples. Last night we were invited to help celebrate the grand opening of the Funko store on Hollywood Boulevard. The 40,000 square-foot Funko Hollywood store will officially open to the public on Monday, November 18, 2019, with a ton of instagramable photo ops featuring characters and locations ranging from Disney animation, Marvel, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Stranger Things, Jurassic Park, It, DC, Star Wars and much much more. At the beginning of the year, we found out there was a Funko movie in development at Warner Bros. Animation. The collectible toy company has turned tons of characters from movies, TV shows, video games and more into collectible figures in their extensive POP line of vinyl figures, but they have a wide variety of stylized figures besides that. Stranger Things 3 only just arrived about a couple months ago, but it feels like it’s been over a year. Who knows how long we’ll be waiting until a fourth season of the Netflix series gets off the ground, but until then, the ever-expanding line of Funko POPs is giving fans even more vinyl figures to add to their shelf. Though Funko’s bread and butter is undoubtedly their signature POP! vinyl figures, their line-up has expanded to include vehicles that fit the trademark collectible toys. The Ghostbusters Ecto-1, the Jurassic Park Jeep Wrangler, the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, and more have all been turned into what are called Funko POP Rides.
But there’s also the Funko POP Deluxe line, which gives some larger, more unconventional vehicles the POP treatment. The low-tech toy line created to tap into movie nostalgia before going on to become of the most popular blockbuster movie tie-ins is becoming a movie. Warner Bros. has reportedly begun development on a Funko movie, based on the Funko Pop vinyl figurines and bobbleheads that depict everything from popular superheroes, to directors, to obscure TV procedural characters. So not only will these figurines invade Barnes and Nobles stores across the nation, they’ll begin to invade the movie theaters, too.
