Frozen 2 Honest Trailer

(Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a new series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Series: Frozen II

Where You Can Stream It: Disney+

The Pitch: The sequel to the definitive modern Disney film continues the story of Elsa, Anna, Olaf and the rest of the crew in a new musical adventure. And while the box office tells one story (this movie is the reason the original is now the second biggest animated film in Disney’s catalog), the reaction seemed non-plussed and often tepid when it opened in theaters late last year. That’s weird, because Frozen II isn’t just a very good movie, it’s one that stands tall above its predecessor, fixing everything that didn’t quite work the first time around.

Why It’s Essential Viewing: A classic Disney Animation film has to please everyone and it has to do so invisibly. The best of them are stirring adventures, touching romances, madcap comedies, and more, all while feeling cohesive. Frozen managed the balance effectively enough. Frozen II, though, is more confident: it’s more adventurous, more touching, much funnier and, rare for a franchise sequel of any kind, prepared to radically reshape its world in ways that cannot be undone for a sequel.

Oh, and the songs are better.

frozen 2 box office

Disney knew it wouldn’t be dealing with the unknown when it released Frozen II into theaters. The highly anticipated sequel to one of the studio’s biggest hits ever was bound to work its magic over the holiday season. And it did that, and more. Frozen II is now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with a $1.325 billion global box office haul that surpasses the first Frozen and 2018’s Incredibles 2. That is, of course, if you don’t count Disney’s other recent “animated” hit, The Lion King.

weekend box office jumanji

It’s Star Wars week! Which means in a few days, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is going to climb to the top of the box office charts. But first, let’s talk about the most recent weekend box office numbers. After two weeks at number one, Frozen II finally fell to second place thanks to the release of Jumanji: The Next Level. The third entry in the Jumanji franchise opened stronger than the previous film, Welcome to the Jungle. Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum, Playmobil: The Movie continues to be one of the biggest box office flops ever. And apparently no one wanted to go see Clint Eastwood‘s Richard Jewell.

weekend box office frozen II

This might come as a surprise to you, but Disney made a lot of money this year. I know, I know – who would’ve guessed the giant studio that owns nearly every popular franchise would turn a profit? With only a few measly weeks left in 2019, Disney has come out on top as the reigning global box office champ for the year, with Frozen II winning the weekend box office yet again, to boot. And that’s not even taking into account the potential windfall from the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In other words: it’s good to be Disney.

frozen 2 early buzz

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get loud, feisty, political, and opinionated about anything and everything. In this edition: why do modern Disney movie villains stink?)

Early in the new Walt Disney Animation Studios film Frozen II, our main quintet of characters plays a friendly game of charades. Queen Elsa of Arendelle, her goofy sister Princess Anna, their living-snowman pal Olaf, the ice-salesman himbo Kristoff and his reindeer Sven are just relaxing in the castle, with Anna trying to get the others to guess a challenging clue. Though they’re able to narrow it down based on her gestures to the long-gone Prince Hans of the Southern Isles, they don’t get the actual clue: “villain”.

That charade is a fitting word to see the characters struggle to guess, as it exemplifies a fascinating creative direction for Disney Animation over the past decade. Though many of the studio’s films have become bigger and bigger hits, they’ve become less defined by their antagonists, for both good and ill.

Frozen II Bruni and Elsa

“Some things never change,” or so go the lyrics in one of the songs in the highly anticipated Disney sequel Frozen II. This follow-up arrives six years after the worldwide phenomenon of Frozen took hold of popular culture, with its songs becoming so unavoidable and ubiquitous almost overnight. Frozen II attempts to carve out a place for itself while delivering the charm, catchy music, and core emotional underpinnings that so inflamed people’s imaginations in 2013. With its eye-popping animation, world-building, and character exploration, Frozen II is nominally a slight improvement on its predecessor. But it’s still limited by the burden of expectations.

frozen 2 early buzz

Disney heads into the unknown with Frozen II, its first theatrical sequel to one of its biggest hits. Before Frozen II, most of the beloved Disney animated movies would receive at least one direct-to-video sequel or maybe a TV spin-off. But the incredible success of 2013’s Frozen almost necessitated a sequel that could once again tap into Elsa-mania with the help of brand new songs by Oscar-winning songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and the return of Idina Menzel‘s soaring vocals. And, according to critics who got the chance to see the highly anticipated sequel early, that’s exactly where Frozen II succeeds.

Critics praised the dazzling visuals and the undeniably catchy songs of the new film, but questioned whether Frozen II needs to exist at all — aside from being a surefire box office hit. See what critics are saying in the Frozen 2 early buzz below.
