new fred dekker movie

Fred Dekker has only directed three films, but he’s well-known to genre fans. Dekker is responsible for the horror cult classics Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad, but his directing days came to a halt when he helmed 1993’s RoboCop 3. Since then, Dekker has done some TV screenwriting, but finally returned to features in 2018 by penning The Predator script with Monster Squad collaborator Shane Black. Now, some 26 years since his last directing gig, Fred Dekker says he’s ready to make a new movie.

Predator

Shane Black wants to make The Predator an event film. Initially, Black had reservations about the sequel, but 20th Century Fox’s idea of making a genuine piece of big-scale spectacle piqued his interest. Following the forgettable Alien vs. Predator movies and the underwhelming PredatorsThe Nice Guys director and the studio are intent on “doing it right this time.” By doing it “right,” that involves sticking to the original 1986 film’s R-rating.

Below, Black discusses how Deadpool‘s success might’ve helped the project and the new Predator costume.

Shane Black discusses The Predator

We’re only a short while away from seeing Shane Black‘s third directorial effort, The Nice Guys. Just the other day we got a green-band trailer for the 1970s-set buddy comedy, which stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. Next for Black, if all goes according to plan, is The Predator. According to the filmmaker, the ambition is to make the sequel a genuine event film.

the predator sequel

We’re less than two years away from Shane Black‘s The Predator. The writer and director of The Nice Guys co-starred in the original John McTiernan film, partially because McTiernan and producer Joel Silver wanted a writer on the set. Now, Black is making his own Predator picture, titled The Predator, which Arnold Schwarzenegger could possibly appear in.

predator reboot poster

If you haven’t revisited John McTiernan’s Predator recently, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. There’s a reason this franchise has survived beyond two weak sequels and two dire spin-offs that saw the title alien hunter facing off against the Xenomorphs from the Alien series. And that reason is simple: the original Predator is, for lack of a more elegant phrase, really goddamn great. It’s one of the best genre movies ever made, melding ’80s military bravura, slasher horror tropes, and testosterone-soaked science fiction into one unforgettable and bloody mixture. Plus, the title alien is just about the coolest-looking monster Stan Winston ever had a hand in creating and that’s really saying something.

My love of the Predator concept vastly outweighs my disappointment with Predators and my genuine disdain for the Alien vs. Predator movies, so the impending sequel/reboot (rebootquel?) has my piqued my curiosity. Although news regarding this movie has been awfully quiet, a new poster has appeared out of nowhere, reminding the world that this project is in the works and seemingly revealing the film’s actual title.

predator sequel

Shane Black, who appeared in the original Predator as Hawkins, is writing a new Predator sequel with his writing partner Fred Dekker, and Black is attached to direct as well. It’s been a year since we learned of the deal, and in the meantime Black has directed his next film, The Nice Guys. But his Predator movie is still moving along, and the film’s producer has offered an update that keeps us curious about what the screenwriters are cooking up. Read More »

Jason Edmiston - Predator

On the spectrum of news about a reboot, remake or sequel, Tuesday’s reveal of Shane Black and Fred Dekker doing a Predator movie was about as good as it gets. You’ve got Black, of the best writers out there, who also happens to be a solid director and who was involved in the original film. He’s teaming up with his good friend Dekker, himself a pretty great writer and director, and they’re tackling a popular franchise that has only had three dedicated movies. All big wins.

The original story was that this new Predator would be a reboot. But according to Black, that’s not he case. He wouldn’t quantify it exactly but said the film wouldn’t start over when there’s so much mythology to mine. That means it’s a sequel of some sort. Read his exact words below. Read More »

predator reboot

All together now: “it’s ’cause of the echo!” When John McTiernan directed the original Predator, Fox wanted Shane Black to rewrite the script, and gave him a role in the film to lure him to the project. He played the bestpectacled Rick Hawkins, whose dirty jokes are some of the most memorable lines in the film. Now Shane Black is going back to the project. He’s been hired to write treatment for a Predator reboot, which Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) will script. Black may end up directing the film. Read More »
