There’s a new Pink Panther movie on the way, but it won’t feature yet another character related to or inspired by Peter Sellers’ bumbling Inspector Clouseau.
The original series of caper comedy films opened with animated title sequences featuring a quirky pink panther… and those openings spawned a series of cartoon shorts by Friz Freleng and David De Patie that were funny and sometimes strange and impressionistic. (There was also a Saturday morning cartoon series, and in 2010 the Pink Panther and Pals series, but it may be best to avoid talking about that latter show too much.)
Now there’ll be a new hybrid live-action/CG Pink Panther film, derived from those animated title sequences and cartoons. Read More »

“It’s hard to do a 20-minute Maggie episode, but in four minutes it’s great. She’s like Charlie Chaplin.” That’s Simpsons executive producer Al Jean describing to Entertainment Weekly why the youngest member of The Simpsons was chosen to star in The Longest Daycare, a four-minute 3D short film that’ll play in front of Ice Age: Continental Drift when that film opens July 13.

Briefly: MGM: re-animate! There was a point where MGM was noted as an animation house that employed talents like Friz Freling and introduced William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. But the old MGM Cartoon Studio is long since shuttered, and the last theatrical feature to come out of MGM Animation was All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, in 1996.
Now MGM is going back to animation, and the first feature to be developed is one of the few non-remake projects at the studio: an adaptation of the children’s book Punk Farm. Read More »
