The latest film from Final Destination 2 and Snakes on a Plane director David R. Ellis is Shark Night 3D, which opens in theaters today. That makes this afternoon a good time to announce his next film, which will likely be a remake of the anime OVA Kite (aka A Kite), which was directed by Yasuomi Umetsu and released in 1998. Rob Cohen was doing to direct the live-action version at one point, but little has been heard about for some time. The story involves an orphaned girl who is coerced into sexual servitude and murder — in other words, don’t expect a direct translation in this live-action version. Read More »
David R. Ellis, who directed the second and fourth Final Destination films and Snakes on a Plane, at one point was campaigning to have his new film released with the working title intact: Untitled 3D Shark Thriller. That was, he said, because “The title says everything you need to know: ‘We’ve got sharks.’ ‘It’s in 3D.’ and, ‘It’s a thriller.‘”
But Shark Night 3D works pretty well, too. Defiantly horning in on the Jaws + boobs + 3D gore territory of last year’s Piranha (that being super-sacred territory) this one puts a bunch of homogeneously attractive kids on an island, then lets you watch them be torn to bits by sharks. Ellis has been fighting to release the movie under the working title “Untitled 3D Shark Thriller“.

Piranha 3D not enough for you? Is a forthcoming sequel to that movie still not enough for you? Then how about Shark Night 3-D, which, despite what one might hope at first glance, is not a big-screen effort from the folks behind Shark Week at the Discovery Channel?
We’ve talked about this one before, as it is from director David Ellis (the even-numbered Final Destination films and Snakes on a Plane) and writers Jesse Studenberg and Will Hayes. And now we’ve got the first four cast members who’ll get chomped up by a big finned beast in 3D. Read More »
This isn’t a retitling and director change for the Planet of the Apes prequel. It is yet another change for major talent behind the camera on an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic War Monkeys. After going through a couple of potential directors since 2008, now David Ellis, who helmed the second and fourth films in the Final Destination series, will reportedly direct. Read More »
