Last night brought the Halloween episode of Saturday Night Live, and thanks to host Chance the Rapper, the energy was high. Unfortunately (or fortunately in some cases), the number of technical mistakes, gaffes, and line flubs were also high with almost every single live sketch having some kind of error. Since the show is live, there are usually a couple missteps here and there, but this show was riddled with them. Thankfully, they didn’t always make the sketch worse. In fact, in a couple cases, they helped make the sketch much better than it otherwise might have been. It was kind of weird how well it all worked.

As you probably know, radio and television announcer Don Pardo died on August 18th 2014 at age 96. Pardo was the announcer on a ton of NBC shows, including The Price Is Right, Jackpot, Jeopardy!, Three on a Match, Winning Streak and NBC Nightly News. His longest, and most well known announcing job was Saturday Night Live, a gig he held from the show’s 1975 debut until his death (39 seasons). In the English language, the phrase Nature Calls has a few different connotations. The title of this film, which recently had its world premiere at SXSW 2012, refers to men going into the woods to become men. The woods, Earth, nature is calling them for something greater. However, the more appropriate connotation would be when the phrase refers to someone going to the bathroom. Because that’s more akin to what the film is.
Written and directed by Todd Rohal, Nature Calls stars Patton Oswalt as a Boy Scout enthusiast who takes a group of reluctant Scouts into the woods to try and revitalize his dying troop, only to be chased down by his anti-Scout brother, played by Johnny Knoxville. It also stars Rob Riggle, Maura Tierny, Darrell Hammond, and the late, great Patrice O’Neal, to whom the film is dedicated. As a huge fan of O’Neal’s, it truly pains me to say these things about the movie, but he would have agreed. Nature Calls is like an animal distracted by a shiny thing.
