Cloverfield fan film - Megan

Paramount and Bad Robot’s Cloverfield franchise took a dive in quality with this year’s The Cloverfield Paradox, but the franchise isn’t dead yet. We still don’t know with certainty whether this year’s WWII sci-fi thriller Overlord takes place in the Cloverfield universe, and producer J.J. Abrams has promised that a “proper” sequel is on the way.

In the meantime, though, a group of Hollywood filmmakers – VFX artists, cinematographers, writers, producers, and actors – have banded together to make a Cloverfield fan film set in that universe that focuses on a character that was referenced in the 10 Cloverfield Lane ARG campaign: Megan Stambler, the daughter of John Goodman’s character. Check out the short film, entitled Megan, below.

X-Force secret weapon

Early this week, I traveled to Lake Tahoe to cover an early press event for Bad Times at the El Royale, a 1960s-set crime drama written and directed by The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard. He also told me about his secret weapon for the upcoming X-Force movie. Read More »

J.J. Abrams has cracked open his patented mystery box. But just a little bit. The director made an appearance at CinemaCon is Las Vegas to present footage from Bad Robot’s Overlord, which is being touted as the company’s first R-rated film. He also threw water on a popular story spreading all over the internet, insisting that the horror/sci-fi film is not a secret Cloverfield sequel.

That, he says, is also on the way.

Cloverfield Paradox Netflix Deal

While it’s usually the commercials that dominate water cooler chatter the day after the Super Bowl, this year, movie lovers had something else to talk about.

The Cloverfield Paradox, the third installment in what has become a makeshift sci-fi franchise featuring a series of vaguely connected stories from Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures, surprised everyone by debuting on Netflix immediately after the big game instead of coming to theaters in April as originally planned. It was a bold, innovative release strategy, but it seems the decision to catch everyone off guard with the movie’s release wasn’t based on shaking things up. Instead, the studio had little faith in the movie’s prospective performance at the box office. Read More »

teddy bears are for lovers movie

Valentine’s Day may be over, but the nightmare of forgotten exes will never die. In fact, it may come back to stab you in the leg.

Two years ago, a viral short film made in the vein of Gremlins caught the eye of the internet,  and of Lost and Cloverfield cinematographer Michael Bonvillain. We wrote about the funny and smart horror short Teddy Bears Are For Lovers when it was released in 2016, which offered a premise — of vengeful teddy bears from ex-lovers — that was good enough to be a feature film. And lo and behold, Bonvillain will be turning this great short into a bonafide feature film.
