The Tribeca Film Festival is coming in with a super-sized line-up of feature films, including a number of world premieres and critical hits from other festivals like TIFF, Sundance, and SXSW. The Trip to GreeceThe King of Staten Island, Shirleyand the TIFF hit Bad Education are among the movies featured in the Tribeca 2020 line-up, which includes 115 films from 124 filmmakers across 33 different countries. The annual New York City-based film festival runs from April 1526 and will, for the first time ever, also make its way to New Jersey.

Bad Education wasn’t what I’d call the most buzzed-about movie at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but it clearly made an impression with the folks at HBO. The network just plopped down nearly $20 million dollars to purchase the film, a record-breaking sum as far as these things go. The dark comedy is based on a true story and stars Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney.

After the candy-colored bite of his feature debut Thoroughbreds, director Cory Finley handily earned audiences’ attention for whatever he did next. And he was gifted with a riveting story in a 2002 NY Mag article detailing a shocking Long Island public school embezzlement scandal. Yet while Bad Education makes for an interesting watch, it’s a little bit of a bummer that it’s missing the unique style and tone of Finley’s first film.
