It’s not just a fun line from the franchise: Tom Cruise really does feel the need for speed in Top Gun: Maverick. He’s learned that if you’re going to impress audiences with a stunt, it needs to feel as real as possible – so that means actually going up and pulling multiple Gs in a real fighter jet.

Joseph Kosinski is currently directing Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, but as soon as he’s done with that, he’s flying on over to Netflix. Kosinski has been tapped to helm Spiderhead, a sci-fi film from Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Based on a George Saunders short story, Spiderhead focuses on convicts in the near-future who agree to become test subjects for scientific experiments in exchange for reduced prison sentences.

Since a sequel to Top Gun has been in development for years, we won’t really believe it’s happening until the cameras are rolling. But for now, with director Joseph Kosinski set to direct the film with a July 2019 release date, this is the closest Top Gun 2 has ever been to becoming a reality.
Recently, there has been some concern from Paramount Pictures as to whether or not production on Top Gun: Maverick would be able to begin on time. But thanks to some recent remarks from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, it sounds like the sequel won’t be delayed, and there’s a new writer working on the script.
