Netflix is developing a live-action Carmen Sandiego movie starring Annihilation and Jane the Virgin breakout star Gina Rodriguez. And Rodriguez will be doing more than donning the iconic red hat and trenchcoat of the criminal mastermind. Rodriguez will also be producing Netflix’s adaptation of the educational computer game and TV show.

Since co-writing Shrek Forever After a few years ago, Darren Lemke‘s built himself a nice career adapting classic kid-friendly fare into big-screen features. He’s one of the scribes behind the fairy tale retelling Jack the Giant Killer and has worked on reinterpretations of both The Nutcracker and The Wizard of Oz. Outside of the fairyland, he’s doing a fresh draft of the R.L. Walden Media, the team behind The Chronicles of Narnia series, has just purchased the rights to Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? Jennifer Lopez is attached, and though she seems perfect for the lead role, she’s reportedly only going to produce. The hope is that the film, based on a series of geography games that were adapted into a popular Nineties game show and later an animated cartoon, turns into a family adventure along the lines of National Treasure.
