The Pitch: James Caan plays a jewel thief who’s trying to get out of the game. But when he gets entangled in the web of a Chicago gangster, extricating himself from the world of crime proves more difficult than he anticipated.
Why It’s Essential Viewing: If you’re a fan of Michael Mann movies like Heat, Collateral, and Miami Vice, Thief is essential because it’s the foundation on which all those other projects are built. To quote a term from the Black Check podcast, it’s Mann’s Rosetta Stone movie: the one which announces his intentions as a filmmaker and reveals pretty much everything you need to know about his style and interests. I can’t believe October is almost over, but it is. Which means it’s almost November, which also means the year is almost over. Here’s hoping we can close out 2020 with some good news since there has been a distinct lack of it going around. At the very least (and I mean very least), we’ll have new stuff to watch on HBO Max! Eventually, someone is going to make a good video game movie, even if it’s entirely on accident. You something is wrong with this particular corner of filmdom when the high water mark is Paul W.S. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat, which is perfectly fine if you choose to grade it on the video game adaptation curve.
So yes, all video game movie news deserves to be greeted with a healthy amount of skepticism and possibly a raised eyebrow. Until we hear or see otherwise, let’s look forward to the new announced Thief movie with the appropriate level of dread.
