New Outer Limits movie

When Sinister director Scott Derrickson was hired to direct Doctor Strange for Marvel Studios, we first wondered if his co-conspirator C. Robert Cargill might end up writing the latest draft of the movie. That wasn’t to be, and Jon Spaihts ended up getting the Strange gig instead. Sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison is suing New Regency over Andrew Niccol‘s In Time, claiming that the film is a ripoff of his story “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman.” Ellison has a reputation for being lawsuit-happy — in the past, he’s successfully sued to get a credit on The Terminator after claiming the movie was based on episodes of Outer Limits that he had written, and has also had brushes with AOL and ABC. Harlan Ellison is a notoriously prickly fellow.  Aside from his many works, Ellison is infamous for his decade-long feud with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry after he rewrote much of Ellison’s only Trek episode, “The City on the Edge of Forever.” Now that the franchise is in the hands of J.J. Abrams, Ellison is offering his services for the second film in Abrams’ reboot (for a price, of course).

My Influences

Editor’s Note: You probably know Alex Proyas as the director of films like The Crow, Dark City, Garage Days, I Robot and Knowing, but for the next week and a half the filmmaker has agreed to become a guest blogger on /Film. I was too young to see The Exorcist in its first run at the theaters, but I remember reading the novel and being scared to death. Many years later when I was able to see the film, its impact was no less potent. I love thrillers with a spiritual aspect… simply because it centers around a danger out of human control. Sell the initial concept (brilliantly achieved by BLATTY), and you have the potential to create some of the most thrilling moments possible. Forget about the scary beats and cheap jumps which sustain most modern thrillers and horrors – I like a film that prolongs tension for so long that even a quick scene cut to a girl lying in bed with special effects makeup scares the hell out of you.

Dreams with Sharp Teeth

Dreams with Sharp Teeth, a twenty-six-years-in-the-making bio-doc on the life, times, rants, and raves of science fiction writer/raconteur Harlan Ellison directed by Erik Nelson, is a perfect primer for anyone unfamiliar with Ellison’s contributions to the written word, television, and film. Be forewarned, though, Nelson gives Ellison free reign to express his dissatisfaction about anything and everything, from television as opiate (an old argument, that) to creator rights in a tangled, media-saturated world. As fascinating as Dreams with Sharp Teeth is, it’s also frustrating for the questions Nelson doesn’t ask (probably to avoid a patented Ellison rant or rave about whatever subject crosses his path).
