If you’ve seen all the /Film coverage from Sundance and gotten eager to sample the year’s first crop of new movies, you’re in luck! A number of them are hitting theaters almost immediately following their Park City debuts (plus a few on Netflix, including Dee Rees’ supposed bust The Last Thing He Wanted), and that’s on top of what looks like a promising crop of new releases on the studio side of things. If you’re looking to prepare for February’s openings, or perhaps just preparing a double feature with one half at home, here are some viewing options for you.
(Of note: I was not able to include a film for February’s biggest release, Birds of Prey, because director Cathy Yan’s debut feature still does not have U.S. distribution. Dead Pigs somehow got enough attention to get her a gig directing a giant movie for DC Comics, yet no distributor wants to put her prior film out there over two years after it premiered at Sundance. If you watched Ruben Östlund’s uncomfortable dark comedy Force Majeure and thought, “This is good, but it would be better if it was nicer and more watered-down,” you’re in luck. Downhill is exactly that – a remake that is more or less the same movie as its original – with most of what made the original so special tactfully removed.
That’s not to say Downhill is bad – it’s not. It’s perfectly fine. And anyone watching it who hasn’t seen Force Majeure beforehand might find even more to love. But even removing Force Majeure from the equation, Downhill harkens back to the era of forgettable ’90s rom-coms, where any semblance of conflict is tidily wrapped up by the time the credits roll.

Fittingly, that remake, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a couple in crisis, is titled Downhill. But with a comedy all-star team in front of the screen and an Oscar-winning duo behind the camera, could Downhill actually reach the heights of its Swedish predecessor? Hollywood remakes of great foreign films have been common for ages and will always exist as long as most audiences avoid subtitles like the plague. So director Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure getting remade with an all-star cast of comedic talent isn’t surprising. All I can say is “Good luck remaking one of the darkest and most singular comedies of the past 20 years or so.”
Could directors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and superstar Will Ferrell be up to the task? We shall see.
