Horror filmmaking, like most other kinds of filmmaking, tends to be kind of a boys’ club. But the women will get a chance to shine this winter in XX, a horror anthology driven entirely by female directors. Those include Karyn Kusama, who last helmed the fantastic The Invitation; Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, who is making her directing debut; Roxanne Benjamin, who’s contributed to Southbound and the V/H/S series; and Jovanka Vuckovic, who’s known for her short films including The Captured Bird; with animator Sofia Carrillo (La Casa Triste) weaving them all together.

Every superhero show or movie has them: dozens or hundreds of anonymous extras milling about in the backgrounds of all those CG-heavy, city-destroying third-act climaxes, looking alternatively terrified and grateful. Every once in a while, some of them even get to speak – to testify against Superman in Congress or to corner Iron Man in an elevator. Whenever superheroes and supervillains throw down, there’s going to be collateral damage. Sometimes there’s more, sometimes it’s less, but at best we’re talking about millions if not billions in property damage and countless ruined days for ordinary civilians unlucky enough to live in a superpowered universe. While the superheroes get to return to Asgard or hole up in their secret Batcaves or whatever it is they do, these folks are left to sweep up the dust. Now a new comedy promises to tell their stories.
NBC has given a series order to Powerless, a DC Comics comedy about an insurance claims adjuster (Vanessa Hudgens) who has had it with the crime-fighting superheroes messing up her daily commute. Geek favorites Danny Pudi and Alan Tudyk also star, along with Christina Kirk. Ever notice how every single superhero movie seems to end in a massive battle that destroys an entire city? Ever wonder whose job it is to foot the bill and sort through the paperwork afterward? As it happens, NBC is developing a single-camera comedy about just those folks. Powerless follows a group of totally normal people who work in a totally normal insurance company, only they happen to exist in a world with DC superheroes — and all the inconveniences that suggests. (You try getting home in time for your kid’s birthday party when the subways are jammed yet again because some flying dude in a unitard decided he just had to smash an evil alien into the railway.) ‘
But what the characters of Powerless lack in superpowers, they make up for in geek cred.
