The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, a video essay explores the philosophical ramifications of experiencing virtual realty. Plus, check out all the celebrity name-drops Tahani has made on NBC’s series The Good Place so far, and watch Monty Python member Eric Idle break down the various characters he’s played through his decorated comedy career over the years. imax vr experience centre

IMAX VR was supposed to change the face of cinema. When IMAX opened its ground-breaking virtual reality centers in several cities around the world last year, the film community was abuzz with excitement. Would this change movie-going as we know it? Could we finally live our dreams of fighting alongside John Wick?

A year later, it seems like the answer is: probably not. IMAX has closed down two of its VR centers in New York and Shanghai, leaving the future of IMAX VR in question.

Walt Disney Animation is well known for its work in both traditional and CG animation, and now the company is breaking new ground (at least for them). virtual reality movie theater

Virtual reality theaters have been around for a little while now. Last year, /Film’s Peter Sciretta wrote about visiting IMAX’s flagship VR Experience Center in Los Angeles, a physical location where you can don a headset and a haptic backpack to play VR games in pods rented by the hour. But Paramount Pictures has collaborated with companies like Oculus, Samsung, and Microsoft to launch a new virtual reality movie theater that you can visit without leaving your couch. Could this be another step toward phasing out the theatrical experience altogether?

Breaking Bad - RV

We’re still in the midst of the Peak TV era, and while our television screens are practically bursting with a multitude of fantastic new television shows seemingly every day, one show still stands above the rest for me. I consider Breaking Bad to be a major contender for the title of the greatest television show of all time. But as much as I love it, I’m hesitant about ever seeing a revival of the series; I’d much rather see something like Better Call Saul, a spin-off set in the same universe that’s allowed to carve out its own identity.

But a virtual reality experience? That’s a different story. Now we have word that showrunner Vince Gilligan is developing a piece of VR storytelling that might continue the saga of drug kingpin Walter White and the tormented Jesse Pinkman. Read everything we know about the Breaking Bad VR experience below.

Alejandro G Inarritu VR project Carne y Arena

We’ve covered a handful of VR experiences here on the site, but I’ve never heard of anything quite like the new virtual reality project that Birdman and The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu has cooked up. It’s called Carne y Arena, and it’s the first VR installation to screen in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. The New York Times has an excellent breakdown of the experience, which spans three separate rooms and includes a walk-in freezer and a sand-covered floor as it gives you the perspective of migrants crossing the United States/Mexico border. Read the highlights below.
