Why Karl Urban Nearly Passed on ‘Star Trek Beyond’

Star Trek Beyond shows a new side of the enterprise crew. While J.J. Abrams‘ Trek films are very dedicated to Kirk and Spock’s relationship, Justin Lin‘s sequel breathes more life into the supporting characters. Thanks to screenwriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, they have more time to shine, especially “Bones” McCoy. The good doctor is played by Karl Urban, who almost passed on his third outing as the character.

Below, learn why we almost didn’t see Karl Urban in Star Trek Beyond.

Star Trek Beyond Tribute to Justin Lin's Father

Even though he wasn’t born until four years after the series ended its original run in 1969, director Justin Lin grew up watching episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. Reruns would come on at 11pm on Channel 13 in Los Angeles, and from 10 years old until he was 18 years old, he and his family would watch Star Trek after they closed their fish and chips shop and had dinner. So it should come as no surprise that Justin Lin attributes his connection to Star Trek to the connection his family had with the show.

More specifically, the filmmaker believes his father lived vicariously through Star Trek because of the sacrifices he made for that family. Lin explained that his father was a pilot back in Taiwan among plenty other things, but when he decided to give his family a shot at a better life in the United States, he didn’t get a chance to do some of the things he wanted to do back home. As Lin tells Deadline, “He latched on to Trek because of the sense of exploration and discovery, and hope.” Therefore, there was only one way that Justin Lin felt he could honor his father in Star Trek Beyond, and while it’s an obvious tribute, you probably didn’t even notice.

Find out about the Star Trek Beyond tribute to Justin Lin’s father after the jump, but beware of some spoilers. Read More »

star trek beyond spoiler review

In a summer seemingly defined by how disappointing so many movies have been, Star Trek Beyond is an oasis. It’s crowd-pleaser that has something on its mind, a sequel that’s not painfully beholden to massive franchise plans, and a story about the power of positivity overcoming darkness. In short, it’s a unique release for 2016…and the right antidote for 2016.

And since it’s Monday and you’ve had a chance to see it, let’s take a deeper dive into what makes this movie tick.

star trek 4 story

It’s something of a ritual by now. The latest entry in a major franchise arrives, but the people behind the film aren’t talking about it. Instead, they’ve already moved on to the next movie, the hypothetical sequel that only exists in a few conversations and on a cocktail napkin or two. The intention is obvious enough: “Go see this one so we can make the next one!”

This currently applies to Star Trek Beyond, which has received overwhelmingly positive praise from critics (our own Ethan Anderton gave it high marks) but isn’t a surefire smash hit. It’s no wonder producer J.J. Abrams is already singing the praises of the recently announced Star Trek 4 – this is a game of confidence and of properly setting expectations and promising that if you go see this one, you’ll get more Chris Hemsworth in the follow-up.

Star Trek Beyond Review

After recycling a little too much of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, the rebooted franchise based on Gene Roddenberry’s classic sci-fi series needed a new direction to bring some freshness back to the final frontier. Thankfully, with Star Trek Beyond, director Justin Lin has managed to craft a extremely entertaining journey back into space for the USS Enterprise. It’s a sequel that blends some of the signature style of the classic Star Trek series with the action sensibilities of a modern blockbuster.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov

This weekend marks the debut of Star Trek Beyond, and by all accounts it’s quite good. So good, in fact, that Paramount is already moving full speed ahead on a sequel. But there’s a bittersweetness underlying all the warm buzz and giddy celebration — Star Trek Beyond is one of the last-ever completed roles of actor Anton Yelchin, who recently passed away at the age of 27. So how will the franchise deal with Yelchin’s character Chekov going forward?

Producer J.J. Abrams said the filmmakers are still weighing their options, pointing out it’s still “too early” to announce a decision. But the one thing they definitely won’t do, he revealed, is recast the role of Ensign Pavel Chekov with a new actor.  Read More »
