Bohemian Rhapsody Trailer

With just one week until the film starts hitting theaters, the final Bohemian Rhapsody trailer has arrived, and thankfully, this one offers a little more than a greatest hits assembly of cliched moments from a rock and roll biopic. Of course, the biopic tropes are still there, but this trailer actually hones in on the hardships that Queen faced, especially when it comes to frontman Freddie Mercury, played by Mr. Robot star Rami Malek.

bohemian rhapsody featurette

Becoming a rock icon is always a difficult job, but playing one that’s still living? That’s a Herculean task that each of the stars, with the exception of Rami Malek, had to take on in Bohemian Rhapsody. That’s the equivalent of playing Mozart’s concertos while Mozart watches you like a hawk. But Gwilym Lee, Joseph Mazzello, and Ben Hardy were up to the task, as shown in the latest Bohemian Rhapsody featurette released by 20th Century Fox.

bohemian rhapsody director

When the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer dropped, the internet couldn’t help but notice that the trailer was missing one important thing: the director’s name. Well, maybe two things. But regardless, it was a little odd to leave out the name of the director, especially when the trailer for the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic proudly boasted that the film came “from 20th Century Fox and Regency Enterprises.”

Could it be that there was some contention as to whose name should go on the billing after original director Bryan Singer left partway through production and was replaced by Dexter Fletcher? Perhaps at the time — but now those issues are resolved. Singer will reportedly retain his title as the director of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Wayne's World - Mike Myers Joins Bohemian Rhapsody

It’s almost impossible to think of Queen’s signature tune “Bohemian Rhapsody” from their album A Night at the Opera without thinking of the sequence in Wayne’s World where Saturday Night Live veterans Mike Myers and Dana Carvey lip sync and head bang to their heart’s content. Therefore, it only makes sense that Mike Myers is currently in talks to take a role in the biopic about Freddie Mercury, the frontman of the aforementioned rock band. Read More »

rami malek

Rami Malek carries the burden of portraying the first silver screen depiction of Freddie Mercury, and it looks like the Mr. Robot actor may just pull it off.

The first look at Bryan Singer‘s Bohemian Rhapsody biopic was released on what would have been the Queen frontman’s 71st birthday, showing Malek donning Mercury’s signature white tank top and mustache. It’s the first sign that the end is in sight for a movie that has had a long road to production since Queen and Sacha Baron Cohen first took on the project in 2010.

After years of working on the Freddie Mercury biopic, Sacha Baron Cohen parted ways with the project over “creative differences.” Cohen envisioned a warts-and-all, honest bio film, but the remaining members of Queen, unfortunately, were not supportive of that vision.

Below, Sacha Baron Cohen discusses what went wrong with the long-awaited Freddie Mercury biopic, which David Fincher wanted to direct at one point.

Freddie Mercury Movie

Over the weekend, you might have seen some reports that Queen‘s manager said that Sacha Baron Cohen had returned to the Freddie Mercury biopic, and that he would not only star in the film, but that he would write, direct, and produce the movie. This was a huge surprise, since Brian May and the other surviving members of Queen had nixed the Cohen-starring version of the film quite a while ago.

And that’s the way it remains. Queen’s manager did say something about Sacha Baron Cohen returning to the film, but his statement was a joke — a joke that became news thanks to an incomplete transcription. Read More »

Dexter Fletcher to Direct Freddie Mercury Biopic

Sadly, the Freddie Mercury biopic gets a little less promising with each development step. The long-standing assumption was that Sacha Baron Cohen would play the late Queen frontman based on a script by Peter Morgan, with the surviving members of the band (Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon) acting as producers. The band is still on board, but Cohen is gone, reportedly because he wanted to make a wild, R-rated tell-all film, while the band wants something a little more sanitized.

Enter Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas), who will likely be a fine performer to take on the role. And now a director has finally been found: actor turned director Dexter Fletcher (who played roles in Misfits, Stardust, and Kick-Ass) has been signed to make the film as his third directorial effort. Queen Would Like Ben Whishaw to Play Freddie Mercury

Ben Whishaw

Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out of the long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic this summer when he and the remaining members of Queen couldn’t come to an agreement over the film’s tone. The role has remained unfilled since then, but drummer Roger Taylor has now revealed that they already have someone in mind: Ben Whishaw. More details on the possible casting after the jump.
