What makes a movie underrated? In a literal sense, a good movie with overwhelming poor reviews is underrated. But there’s more to it than that. There can be movies that are fairly well received, and yet, they feel unloved; ignored; overlooked. So when it came time to compile a list of the most underrated movies of the decade, I decided not to just focus on the titles I felt deserved better reviews, but also films that deserved more love; more attention. Movies that were viewed by wide audiences, and yet were misunderstood. As the 2010s end, it’s time to give these movies their due. They’re presented below alphabetically.

Get your flamethrowers ready, because it’s about to go down. After raking in over $6 billion dollars* at the box office in 2016, the fresh musical mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping from The Lonely Island is finally getting the screening treatment it deserves. Just three years after pleasuring the eyes, ears, and hearts of millions, Alamo Drafthouse is giving Popstar a series of sing-along screenings at 26 of their theater locations around the United States. That’s almost as many seconds as it takes to get to Mars. Read More »
Universal Pictures released Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in June of 2016, and the movie was completely overshadowed by the rest of blockbuster season. Despite being raucously hilarious, the movie bombed hard with a total domestic box office total of just $9.6 million. But in the three years since then, it’s become a cult favorite – so much that the soundtrack finally got an outstanding vinyl release from Mondo, and now Shout Factory is giving us the Popstar Steelbook Blu-ray release we deserve. Because the world is cruel, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping bombed at the box office. But it seems Popstar has found a cult following since its disastrous theatrical release, because Mondo is releasing the film’s original soundtrack by The Lonely Island on vinyl. And there are five different album covers that you can choose from too. Check out the Popstar vinyl soundtrack below. Read More »
Over the weekend, the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards and the 89th cademy Awards both honored Moonlight with the top honors for the Best Picture of 2016. It’s amazing that director Barry Jenkins had his movie recognized for being the stellar piece of cinema that it is. But we need to talk about another Best Picture winner that was seen perhaps even less than the indie Moonlight.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was a box office bomb last summer, doing so poorly at the summer box office that it couldn’t even break $10 million. That’s a real shame, because it’s the best comedy of the year, and it’s one of those movies that people would love if they just gave it a chance. Thankfully, at least one organization decided give Popstar the respect it deserved. Russell Simmons‘ second annual All Def Movie Awards gave Popstar the honor of Best Picture.

If you didn’t see Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping this summer, you’re part of the problem. Universal Pictures gave us this glorious, original comedy chock full of outstanding new songs from The Lonely Island, a barrage of incredible cameos, and some of the biggest laughs of the year. And how did audiences respond? Well, they didn’t, because the movie didn’t even hit $10 million in its theatrical run. But next month, you can make up for it when the movie hits home video.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on September 13, and it will hit VOD a couple weeks earlier on August 30. To help promote the arrival of the movie, a Popstar deleted scene has made its away online featuring an entire song that didn’t make the final cut of the movie (though you could have listened to it on the soundtrack). But beware that this scene is NSFW due to language, because the song is called “Fuck Off,” and they repeat that phrase more than a few times throughout. Read More »
It may only be June, but it’s going to take some damn good comedy to top the fits of laughter brought upon by Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. After The Lonely Island trio (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) made a splash with their digital shorts on Saturday Night Live, it’s amazing it took them this long to put together a mockumentary following the rise and fall of a faux musician in the real world music industry. But for as long as it took, the hilarity delivered by Popstar makes it well worth the wait.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Even though Saturday Night Live is done until the new television season starts in the fall, this week we’re getting a big dose of comedy from some of the sketch show’s veteran performers and writers. The Lonely Island is bringing their music industry mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to theaters on June 3, and Universal Pictures is putting out everything they can to spread awareness.
Following the music video for “The Finest Girl” that was released during the season finale of Saturday Night Live, a new video featuring Andy Samberg as faux rapper Conner4Real has the artist doing a little freestyle song about just how weird he is. The weird things he does include using a banana as a phone and taking the middle seat on a plane. Watch the new Popstar music video after the jump. Read More »
We’re just one week away from the release of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The R-rated comedy from the comedic rap trio known as The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) features an endless array of cameos, some playing themselves, some playing ridiculous characters. However, there’s one cameo in the movie where instead of seeing a well-known face, you only see a certain part of their anatomy that is sparsely seen on film.
In Popstar, there’s a really funny sequence involving a fully exposed penis, and while you never see the face of the person the male member belongs to, the identity of this person is more than surprising. Find about the Popstar nude scene below. Read More »
