Releasing a third Pitch Perfect movie is like singing to a choir — its built-in audience will propel the movie to the top of the box office charts no matter the Rotten Tomatoes score.
And with Pitch Perfect 3‘s $30.3 million international haul pushing the franchise past the $500 million mark worldwide, it proves that these Bellas still have it. But despite the impressive global numbers, the third and final Pitch Perfect film is down considerably from the second movie at the box office. Aca-not awesome.

This weekend brings Pitch Perfect 3 to theaters, offering a different kind of musical opposite Hugh Jackman’s circus extravaganza in The Greatest Showman. So just in case you haven’t seen the first two installments of the a capella franchise, Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Chrissie Fit, Hana Mae Lee, and Ester Dean took the time to run through both Pitch Perfect movies in under seven minutes. It’s not as fun musically, but it’s a good way to catch up for anyone who has a friend dragging them to the final performance of the Bellas.

Pitch Perfect 3 cannot shake the stench of desperation from start to finish. Here is a film that has no good creative reason to exist, made by people who are painfully aware of that fact. Though this third entry in the unexpected franchise brings together most of the key players who made the 2012 original mostly delightful, there is a tired, frantic sense to these proceedings. Once, Pitch Perfect wanted to be a playful, upbeat modern musical. Pitch Perfect 3 can’t help but struggle to achieve even that basic ambition. This movie is being marketed as the final chapter, which still might be one too many.

Those dang millennials, let me tell you. As I’ve been told by numerous think-pieces, they’re killing off everything, checking their phones too much, and riding their roller blades all over the town. But here’s one old fashioned thing millennials are still interested in: going to the movies. At least during the current holiday season. A new study by Fandango reveals that those crafty, hard-to-pin-down millennials are planning to flock to multiplexes to take in new films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

The ladies are back, pitches. In Pitch Perfect 3, Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and the rest of the acapella-singing Bellas have graduated from Barden University and are looking for work in the real world. In this new clip from the film, the Bellas meet their fellow performers and launch into a classic riff-off…which leads to a lot of confusion (and some pretty catchy tunes).

The marketing for Pitch Perfect 3 is referring to this as “last call,” so there’s a chance that this truly is the final time audiences will be able to hang out with Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, and the rest of the Bellas. And while this new trailer for the sequel promises a film that’s just as enjoyable as the first two, it might actually be a good idea for this franchise to go out on top after the curtain falls here, because it seems like it’s reached its natural conclusion.
