Maze Runner: The Death Cure review

There’s a lot to like in the final installment of the Maze Runner series. Maze Runner: The Death Cure is not a perfect movie — no movie that tries to have its cake and eat it too truly can be — but as far as franchise blockbusters go, it’s not too bad.

This YA dystopian movie has everything: zombies, explosions, deadly missiles, and Giancarlo Esposito in a fabulous coat. Aiden Gillen’s also rocking a sweet turtleneck, but the fashion choices of the prestigious character actors is besides the point: the Maze Runner trilogy is officially reaching the end of the labyrinth.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure is closing out the YA dystopia series — admittedly, one of the better ones we’ve seen in the past decade — with a bombastic third and final act. That means the Gladers, led by Dylan O’Brien‘s Thomas, will be going back into the deadliest maze they’ve faced yet. Because as everyone knows, the only way to move forward is to go back.

You’d think after three movies, the gang of kids led by Dylan O’Brien would have made it out of that maze by now. Actually, they did — the majority of the second film, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, takes place as the plucky Gladers venture out into the desiccated outside world, deserted except for a few human survivors and hordes of bloodthirsty zombies. But as the saying goes, sometimes you have to go back to move forward, and in the final Maze Runner film, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the Gladers have willingly returned to WCKD to face off against the most dangerous maze they’ve faced yet.

Maze Runner The Death Cure Trailer

Fans have been patiently waiting to see the concluding chapter of the Maze Runner trilogy after Dylan O’Brien was injured during a stunt gone wrong while the film was shooting in 2016. Originally set for release earlier this year, Maze Runner: The Death Cure is now coming to theaters in February of 2018, and the first trailer has just been unleashed.

At the end of Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) was preparing to take the fight to WCKD to rescue Minho, kill Dr. Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson), and bring the rebel group The Right Arm and the rest of his fellow Gladers with him. The first Maze Runner The Death Cure trailer, which debuted during the finale of Teen Wolf on MTV, shows us that Thomas isn’t screwing around anymore. Read More »

barry pepper knives

Here’s something that slipped under the radar – actor Barry Pepper posted a YouTube video last December in which he showed off his previously unknown blacksmithing ability. What’s more, he used this hobby to craft a knife he personally designed for his character in the upcoming Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

We always knew Pepper was an intense performer ever since his breakout performance in Saving Private Ryan, and he has always managed to play characters that have plenty of use for a knife. This has apparently turned into a bit of a passion project for him, in which he tries to personalize the role by designing items for his characters, either with the aid of the movie’s prop master or by himself in his smithy.

And yes, Pepper does offer a tour of his personal forge in a video that you can watch below.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure Featurette

Last spring, production on Maze Runner: The Death Cure was halted and then postponed indefinitely after lead actor Dylan O’Brien suffered a concussion with a facial fracture and lacerations after a stunt went wrong. Last we heard, production was supposed to resume early this year in order to meet the February 2018 release date recently set by 20th Century Fox, but we’ve had no word of the film shooting again.

For those fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Maze Runner franchise, it sounds like everything is all right because Fox provided a first look at the sequel during the MTV Movie Awards this past weekend. Dylan O’Brien and some of the other cast members show us around the WCKD compound where we get to see a lot of hallways and laboratories.
