Showtime’s new dramedy Kidding stars Jim Carrey in a dramatic role. He plays children’s television host Jeff Pickles, star of Mr. Pickles’ Puppet Time, who sings songs to teach kids about life lessons, but inside he’s dealing with real pain. His son died in an automobile accident a year before, and he’s now estranged from his wife (Judy Greer) and surviving son.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind filmmaker Michel Gondry directed the pilot (which is available to watch for free online right now) and five more episodes of KiddingGondry spoke with /Film before the Kidding panel at the Television Critics Association. Kidding premiered last night and airs Sunday nights on Showtime.

2018 Showtime Shows

At the cable networks Television Critics Association panel this weekend, Showtime detailed their upcoming slate of original shows, including new vehicles for stars like Jim Carrey, Catherine Keener, Benicio del Toro, and Kevin Bacon, coming from filmmakers like Michel Gondry, Ben Stiller, Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and Matt Damon & Ben Afleck.

Jim Carrey and Michel Gondry are meeting again, though not in Montauk.

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind star and director are teaming up for a Showtime series titled Kidding, a half-hour comedy series about a former children’s TV personality who starts to slowly lose his sanity in the face of a disintegrating family life. It’s no trippy backwards love story, but it sounds like the two will be tapping into the existential dreamscape that made Eternal Sunshine such a revelation. Now, if only they could get Kate Winslet on board.
