Misery Loves Comedy is one of the films I wish I could have seen at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It was presented as a special screening, slotted at a very inconvenient time all the way on the top of Main Street at the Egyptian. Thankfully, actor/comedian Kevin Pollak‘s documentary film was sold at Sundance to Tribeca Film, which will allow all of us to see it when it is released on iTunes on April 14th and in limited theaters on April 24th 2015. Early on in The Graduate, there’s that iconic moment. Ben Braddock, a recent college grad, is talking with the beautiful older family friend Mrs. Robinson. Ben says, “Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me.” It’s iconic thanks to director Mike Nichols’ choice of angle, the delivery of the line by Dustin Hoffman, and the way that one sentence sets the entire story into motion.
At Jason Reitman‘s final live read of the season, actor Jay Baruchel played the role of Ben Braddock. When he got to that line, delivered next to his Mrs. Robinson, Sharon Stone, the 32-year-old actor broke character, cocked his right arm on his side and whispered, “Yes!” He was excited, not just because he nailed the legendary line, but maybe he got the feeling what was to follow was going to go very well. Reitman’s casting of Baruchel as the nervous, unsure, yet charming and likable Ben couldn’t have been more perfect. The same could also be said for Sharon Stone, whose Mrs. Robinson was sexy, confident and cool.
Though both actors were merely sitting in chairs, reading lines of dialogue, their body language created an electric chemistry that turned the combination of a great cast and a flawless script into a memorable event. In a piece of fan casting worthy of years and years of Ghostbusters 3 speculation, director Jason Reitman has revealed that for his next live reading, Ghostbusters, he’s cast Seth Rogen, Jack Black and Rainn Wilson as Venkman, Stanz and Spengler respectively. The event, part of an ongoing series presented by Film Independent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, takes places Thursday December 12. It’s sold out.
Of course, Jason Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, directed the hit 1984 film and revealed to his son that much of the famous dialogue was improvised by Bill Murray. So this isn’t just a script reading, it’s a combination of the original shooting script with Murray’s iconic one-liners. With Saoirse Ronan already locked in for Andrew Niccol‘s The Host, the search is on for two handsome young lads to play the male leads. Jake Abel has just been selected for the part of Ian, beating out several competitors including Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond the Pines), Thomas McDonnell (Prom), and Augustus Prew (Charlie St. Cloud). Abel, who’s still negotiating his deal, has worked with Ronan once previously on Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones. More recently, he’s also starred in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and I Am Number Four.
Based on a novel by Stephenie Meyer, The Host revolves around a woman named Melanie (Ronan) whose body is possessed by an alien parasite named Wanderer. Ian is a human who initially attacks Wanderer, but eventually falls in love with her. The other major mail character, that of Melanie’s boyfriend Jared, is still being cast; Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones), Jai Courtney (One Shot), and Max Irons (Red Riding Hood) are among the contenders for that part. As you know, we’re big fans of long form interviews at /Film. In the past, we’ve posted extended 30-minute and possibly even one-hour interviews found on shows as Charlie Rose and other corners of the interwebs. Its rare that we see a filmmaker or screenwriter interviewed for anything longer than that. Well, this week The Kevin Pollak Chat Show had a 2 hour and fourty minute interview with Damon Lindelof, co creator and showrunner of Lost, producer for Star Trek, co-writer/producer for Star Trek 2, writer of Jon Favreau‘s Cowboys & Aliens and Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus.
During the interview, Lindelof talks about his twitter “feud” with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, his inspirations, learning at NYU, his early life trying to make it in Hollywood, Stephen King and King film/TV adaptations, Star Wars vs. Star Trek, the creation of Lost and working with JJ Abrams, collaborating with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on Cowboys & Aliens, working with Ridley Scott on Prometheus and how it connects to the Alien films, how the writer’s strike allowed him to produce Star Trek while also working on Lost, brief thoughts on the newly announced 1952 project he’s working on for Disney, his Larry King impression, and much more. Comedian/Actor Kevin Pollak revealed on Twitter that he has been offered a role in Kevin Smith‘s upcoming R-Rated buddy cop comedy A Couple of Dicks. Pollack tweeted:
“Offer from @ThatKevinSmith to join ol’ pal B. Willis & crazy Tracy Morgan in his Couple of Dicks has me smiling huge. See ya in nyc fellas.”
No word on which character Pollack would play. Three big male roles that haven’t been cast/announced include the rich father of Willis’ daughter’s fiance, the sports memorabilia-obsessed gangster and a memorabilia store owner. Smith just wrapped Day one of filming and tweeted the following:
“Wrapped Day One on A COUPLE OF DICKS without being one or sucking one. Bruce & Tracy are so good together, you’d think this was the sequel.”
