Finding Dory opens in theaters this summer, and we all know what that means: a new Pixar short film is on the way. The company’s latest short, Piper, follows a baby sandpiper that must conquer its fear of the water in order to eat. Alan Barillaro directed Piper, which he was inspired to make after witnessing thousands of birds flying away from waves, only to then return to the ocean to eat.
Below, Barillaro discusses his experience of making the Pixar short Piper.

Disney’s Zootopia is already one of the most successful films of the year. The film has raked in over $786 million worldwide and it’s one of the best reviewed films of the year with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you haven’t gone to see it yet, you’re missing out on one of Disney’s best animated films. Personally, I even think it’s better than Frozen, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6.
If you’ve already seen Zootopia, then you might want to check out a fantastic 45-minute documentary that takes you behind the scenes, showing how the movie evolved during the two years of production that a team from Fusion spent at Walt Disney Animation studios. It’s a thorough and fascinating look at how an animated movie is made and how Zootopia changed during that process.

Earlier this week we told you how Zootopia was going to be a different movie, originally following Jason Bateman’s character Nick Wilde and featuring an more-in-your-face message. Well you might be surprised that the original idea for Zootopia was a James Bond parody featuring talking animals. How the that idea evolve into whats now on the screen? Read my exclusive interview with directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore and discover how a story like this evolves within the Disney Animation Studios creative process.

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Pixar Animation Studios and preview the company’s next film The Good Dinosaur. You can read what I learned about the making of The Good Dinosaur here. While at Pixar, I had that opportunity to sit down with a bunch of the creatives behind the film.
After the jump you will find my interview with director Peter Sohn, who I’ve talked to a few times over the years and seems like a great and talented guy. In the interview, Pete talks about some of his favorite movies he recommends to friends, the evolution of the project over the years, how he got involved as a director, his vision behind the stark contrast between the beautiful, almost photo realistic backgrounds and the cartoony characters, a scene from the film that I felt was a homage to Jaws, the 1400 kid search for the main star of this film, how directing the voice actors for the English version of Miyazaki’s Ponyo helped him in making this film, and find out who directs Peter Sohn when he performs in his own film. All this and more in our Peter Sohn Good Dinosaur interview, after the jump.

John Lasseter took the stage (again) during Pixar’s portion of the animation panel at the D23 Expo 2015 to talk about Toy Story 4, which has been revealed to be a love story between Woody and Bo Peep, inspired by Lasseter’s own relationship with his wife.
Lasseter called Toy Story 3 “a perfect story completion,” but the Pixar brain trust “made a pinky promise never to make another one unless they had a story that was worth it.” This idea came up in a meeting for a different movie, leading to Lasseter and Andrew Stanton privately working on this idea for a while. With a treatment eventually written by Stanton, they took it to Pixar. The Toy Story 4 D23 presentation revealed a couple other details, which we have below. Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Pixar premiered its new film Inside Out at Cannes, and along with that finished debut the studio showed off footage from two other upcoming films, The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory.
The former film, about a dinosaur who befriends a human boy, represents the culmination of a long and ultimately revamped story development cycle. The latter is the sequel to Finding Nemo. Thanks to the Cannes presentation we have a few new comments from John Lasseter about each film, and tantalizing descriptions of environments in The Good Dinosaur as among the most realistic Pixar has ever created. There’s a little over two years until the story of Woody and Buzz continues in Toy Story 4 and the film just got a major addition. Josh Cooley, the head of story on Inside Out, has been hired as John Lasseter‘s co-director on the film. It’s a move that makes sense considering Lasseter already wears about 50 hats at Disney. Read more about the Toy Story 4 co-director below. Read More »
