Sweetheart finds a young girl forced to reckon with a hungry monster on a deserted island, and a new clip reveals how she starts to make this discovery when she stumbles upon a makeshift graveyard of those who have perished on this island before her. Sweetheart Review

J.D. Dillard’s Sweetheart is fierce aquatic horror without any frills. Think Cast Away, but instead of a volleyball companion named “Wilson,” it’s a man-eating sea monster who hunts by moonlight. There’s your plot. A marooned survivor with no immediate escape and her fishman rival. Simplicity can be a beautiful thing, and Dillard’s waterlogged grudge match is one such occasion. After breaking out with his feature directorial debut SleightJ.D. Dillard is becoming a hot commodity in Hollywood, with his latest project becoming the center of a heated bidding war.

Legendary beat out other competitors for the rights to Mastering Your Past, a thriller that landed Dillard a seven-figure deal to co-write the script with Matt Owens (Luke Cage, The Defenders) and another seven figures to direct. This right off the heels of the rave reviews for his latest Sundance darling, Sweetheart.

Sleight Trailer - Jacob Latimore

With all the superhero movies hitting theaters each year, audiences are getting a little sick of origin stories. But in the Sundance selected film Sleight, we get a movie that takes a homegrown approach to the superhero origin thanks to some ingenuity and street-level drama.

Sleight follows a young high school boy named Bo (Jacob Latimore) who must take on the responsibility of caring for his younger sister after a family tragedy leaves them alone. Barely getting by with the money he gets from strangers for doing street magic, he can’t help but get involved with some of the wrong people, for the sake of his family. That creates all sorts of problems, but he just might have the right tricks to get out of them.
