Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet has signed up to play silent film star Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle in an HBO biopic titled The Day the Laughter Stopped. Arbuckle was one of the most popular, most successful actors of his time, but his career fell apart after he was accused of raping and murdering actress Virginia Rappe. Although he was eventually acquitted, he never completely recovered. He enjoyed only a very brief comeback before he died of a heart attack in 1933 at the age of 46.

Barry Levinson is set to direct the film from a script penned by John Adams screenwriter Kirk Ellis. The project is apparently something of a dream come true for Stonestreet, who’s been looking for a potential Arbuckle project since the late ’90s. [Vulture]

What is the origin of this teaser trailer in which Old Spice pitchman Isaiah Mustafa plays Marvel hero Luke Cage? We know that Marvel Studios has talked about making a Luke Cage film, but this is not a trailer for that movie. This is, in effect, a trailer for a film that doesn’t exist. So did Isaiah Mustafa conjure this up on his own, or is there some other force at work?

Check out the teaser below and start talking about whether he seems right for the part. Read More »

Luke Cage isn’t one of Marvel’s higher-end properties, but in keeping with their strategy to build smaller budget action pics (about $20-$40 million) around their third tier characters, they’ve been slowly making progress on bringing the urban hero to the big screen. At one point John Singleton was attached to direct, and Tyrese Gibson (Fast Five, Transformers) was in talks to take on the role. That started around 6-7 years ago though, so that time may have passed.

The time hasn’t passed for Marvel, however. Just last year, the studio was said to be in preliminary talks for the film with “a notable Hollywood star”. It’s doubtful that was in reference to Old Spice spokesman Isaiah Mustafa — an actor who has frequently voiced his desire to play the character — but given how supportive the online comic book geek community has been toward his proposed casting, it’s worth noting that he has in fact met with Marvel about playing Luke Cage. Learn more about this, and where Captain America fits into The Avengers, after the break. Read More »

I’ve been hearing about a possible sequel to Free Enterprise for over ten years now. I really thought it was a pipe dream that would never happen. But apparently the sequel is actually happening, likely thanks to the recent jump in Trek popularity thanks to the JJ AbramsStar Trek-reboot. If you haven’t yet watched Robert Meyer Burnett‘s 1998 indie film, it can be easily described as Swingers for sci-fi geeks. It was about two aspiring LA filmmakers/Trek geeks who meet their screen idol, William Shatner (played by himself), who turns out to be nothing like the person they had imagined. The film has gone on to become something of a cult classic among geeks, and I highly recommend you check it out.

Burnett has been trying to get a sequel greenlit for years now, and it is now falling into place.
