Harry Potter on Halloween

Horse-drawn carriages can be seen making their way to the black castle of Hogwarts, drenched in thick fog and a glimmer of moonlight. Sheaths of rain torrent down into sloshing puddles on the cold earth. A single crow emerges into the scene and perches atop a sign in-frame that reads “Hogsmeade.” “Something wicked this way comes,” a choir of witches and wizards trills in unison, cradling big fat toads that croak along with the haunting, but jubilant tune.

Indeed, something wicked does come quite quick in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, a major franchise installment so drenched in distinct silky style laden with the comforts of a crisp fall day, it is regarded by many as the best film in the series due to director Alfonso Cuarón’s unique vision and genuine artistic flair. With the only director of any Harry Potter film to really lean into the standard sensibilities of a narrative marked by magic and ghosts, the film ends up reading as a love letter to October, to Halloween, and to the entire season of autumn.

Harry Potter LEGO Set

LEGO is keeping their new Harry Potter line of building brick playsets going strong with an addition of five more buildable scenes inspired by Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

New Harry Potter LEGO sets include another section of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that connects to one of the previously released sections of the castle, Hagrid’s Hut, one of the tasks from the Triwizard Tournament, a signature vehicle from the third Harry Potter film, and an all-too-important scene involving Harry’s godfather Sirius Black. Harry Potter Vinyl Soundtrack Set

Though vinyl is now enjoying quite a resurgence among music fans as a popular format for listening to music, during most of the time that the Harry Potter franchise was hitting theaters, it was an almost entirely dead form of media. That means most of the soundtracks for each of the movies never got released on vinyl. But that’s about to change.

Rhino has announced a new Harry Potter box set that will include the scores from the first five films in the franchise on vinyl for the first time ever. Find out more about the Harry Potter vinyl soundtrack set coming in November. Read More »

VOTD: The Films Of Alfonso Cuaron

Alfonso Cuaron films Gravity

What Alfonso Cuaron lacks in quantity of films made, he damn sure makes up for in quality. He’s only made seven movies over almost 25 years but it’s as if he somehow gets exponentially better with each and ever one.

I admit to not knowing much about his first feature, Love in the Time of Hysteria, but it allowed him to two whimsical crowd pleasers, A Little Princess and Great Expectations. From there, he directed the sexy, provacative Y Tu Mama Tambien then switched gears entirely by doing arguably the best (and most influential) Harry Potter film of the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. From there, he blew minds with the masterpiece, Children of Men and finally won the Oscar for Best Director for his amazing work on Gravity.

It’s a short but insanely impressive list and below you can relive them all in a tribute to Alfonso Cuaron films. Read More »

As much time and money and effort as Hollywood pours into big-budget franchises, only a handful manage to make a real lasting impression on moviegoers. But the best of them live on long after the last installment has hit theaters, and one that falls into that category is Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter series.

From 2001 to 2011, the studio released eight films based on J.K. Rowling‘s books. Collectively, they’re are one of the most successful cinematic series of time by any standard — critically, commercially, culturally. Even now, after all the cast and crew have moved onto other projects, fans still harbor a deep affection for the Boy Who Lived.

In tribute to the beloved fantasy saga, Kees Van Dijkhuizen Jr. has edited together a gorgeous thirteen-minute retrospective titled “Mischief Managed.” Hit the jump to watch his video, and be warned that you may get a lump in your throat once John Williams‘ iconic theme kicks in.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

The moment I walked out of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 last summer, I remember thinking “I can’t wait to own the entire series in one Blu-ray box set.” Warner Bros. quickly obliged with a disappointing barebones release for the 2011 holiday season and then vowed to take the movies off shelves. Why would they do such a thing? Probably to build hype for the set that just popped up on Amazon.

Amazon is now taking orders for the Harry Potter Wizards Collection, a 31-disc box set featuring all eight films in the series and much, much more. Retail price is $499.99 but you can now pre-order for the almost as obscene $349.99. See more of the set, including a video, and read the early specs below. Read More »
