the innocents trailer

The wait for Stranger Things season 3 has been extended another year, but we can do more than just twiddle our thumbs while waiting for Netflix’s flagship supernatural series. Because an intriguing new British shape-shifter series coming later this month may just fill all our Stranger needs. But with a dash of teen romance thrown in. And Guy Pearce!

The Innocents is a British supernatural series that follows a teen runaway named June (Sorcha Groundsell) who discovers that she has a genetic ability to shape-shift. Terrified and confused, she and her fellow runaway Harry (Percelle Ascott) try to make sense of this strange new power and fend off the shifty figures — all while figuring out their blossoming feelings for each other. But the first The Innocents trailer suggests that this is less a Twilight knock-off than a thematic cousin to Netflix’s own horror-tinged Stranger Things.

Iron Man 3 Female Villain

Guy Pearce is no stranger to playing shady scientists conducting mysterious experiments on soldiers in comic book movies. After all, he played that part to sleazy perfection in Iron Man 3. So it’s no wonder that he’s been cast in a similar role in Sony’s upcoming comic book adaptation Bloodshot, replacing original actor Michael Sheen.

alien covenant wraps

Alien: Covenant, the sequel to Prometheus and the sixth film in the Alien series, has played its cards close to its vest throughout filming, leaving most of the film’s plot details and characters specifics hidden from view. However, a few interesting details have begun to leak out from a tiny breach in the production’s hull, including the return of a certain Alien character and the nature of one performance in the film.

Iron Man 3 Female Villain

There have been some disappointing decisions on the merchandise side of things from Disney and Marvel Studios, specifically with regards to their treatment of female characters. Black Widow, once the only female member of the Avengers, had a rather disappointing shortage of toys, so much that Avengers star Mark Ruffalo lamented that his daughters and nieces couldn’t find many at the store. In fact, Black Widow was even left out of an action figure playset inspired by a key scene for the character in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now some more upsetting details from behind the Marvel machine have been revealed.

Director Shane Black has been out promoting The Nice Guys (in theaters this weekend), and a recent interview saw part of the discussion steer towards Iron Man 3 and some of the difficulties he had on the production. One surprising revelation that came from the discussion was that the primary villain in the movie, played by Guy Pearce, was originally slated to be a female character. But Marvel forced a change in the character’s gender because they believed a female villain action figure wouldn’t sell as well. Wow.

Equals trailer

A lot of filmmakers have a certain theme they return to time and time again, and for director Drake Doremus it seems to be love in all of its messiness and complications. Like Crazy dealt with the long-distance relationship between an American and a Brit, and Breathe In with the love affair between a married man and a much younger woman. His latest film, Equals, pushes him into the sci-fi realm for the first time… but it’s still a love story at heart, chronicling a romance that unfolds under the most inhospitable of circumstances.

Nia (Kristen Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult) live in one of those Apple Store dystopias that seem so popular at the cinema these days. All human emotion, including sexual desire, has been eradicated. But Silas and Nia begin to fall for each other when they catch a disease that sparks feeling in its victims, and strike up a dangerously forbidden romance. A two-hour movie about a book editor might not be the most enticing subject matter for some filmgoers, but Genius isn’t just about any book editor. Maxwell Perkins (Colin Firth) was the editor that discovered literary Gods, such as F. Scott Fitzegerald (Guy Pearce), Ernest Hemingway (Dominic West), and Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law). Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage makes his feature directorial debut with Perkins’ story.

Results trailer

Results came out of Sundance this year, and shows director Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha HaMutual Appreciation) moving into more polished comedy than the very low-key films that originally made his name. This one stars Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, and Kevin Corrigan as an unlikely trio who are united by Corrigan’s neediness and depression after a divorce. And that sounds pretty heavy, but this first Results trailer makes the story look bitterly funny, with a particularly good turn from Smulders.  Read More »
