Guardians of the Galaxy 2

The soundtracks to the films in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise are among the most beloved in recent memory. Featuring outstanding classics from the 1970s, they bring a unique vibe to the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there’s at least one song that writer/director James Gunn won’t be including when the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack comes around, and it’s for one very good reason. Read More »

thor timeline

During Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con panel this past weekend, producer Kevin Feige confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still happening, though it won’t be included in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But when Thor: Love and Thunder was announced on the Hall H stage, that left many fans wondering about the future of Thor.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder leaves New Asgard in Valkyrie’s capable hands and heads off with the Guardians for some space adventures (and presumably to find Gamora). But will Guardians Vol. 3 or Thor: Love and Thunder pick up that story?

Guardians Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn is busy making The Suicide Squad over at WB/DC, but in a recent Instagram comment, he seemed to give an answer. See what he said below, and we’ll explore how either scenario could affect Thor’s potential storyline.

James Gunn‘s number one fan Dave Bautista has made his peace with Disney. Most of the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy had publicly spoken out against the company following Gunn’s firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last year, but none spoke more loudly than Bautista, who had threatened to leave the franchise altogether. But now with Gunn happily back in the employ of Marvel and Disney, Bautista has repaired his relations with the House of Mouse.

rocket raccoon guardians of the galaxy 3

In his first interview following his firing and eventual rehiring to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn struck a remarkably even tone while talking about the roller coaster he went through. But while he has largely made peace with how things unfolded, Gunn said there was one element of the entire debacle that would have hit him hard: not being able to finish Rocket Raccoon’s arc. The sardonic anthropomorphic raccoon played by Bradley Cooper was near to Gunn’s heart, and he suggests that in the third Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket would wrap up his arc from distrustful petty criminal to full-fledged hero.

guardians of the galaxy firing

Last summer, James Gunn was on top of the world. And then he wasn’t. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise filmmaker was fired by Disney after offensive joke tweets from his past resurfaced, and despite fan outcry defending Gunn, it looked like his days with Marvel were over – especially when word broke that he was heading over to DC and Warner Bros. to direct the Suicide Squad sequel. But in March of this year, Marvel and Disney reversed their decision, and rehired Gunn to helm the third Guardians entry. In a new interview, Gunn gets candid about his Guardians of the Galaxy firing and rehiring.

guardians 3 and endgame

Avengers: Endgame concludes with a pretty clear set-up for what might happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It’s so explicit, in fact, that you might assume Guardians mastermind James Gunn played a big part in shaping how Endgame would lead into his sequel. But that’s not what happened. According to Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, they haven’t even read Gunn’s script, and were given the freedom to do whatever they wanted.

endgame sets up guardians of the galaxy vol. 3

One of the most refreshing things about Avengers: Endgame is how conclusive it feels. Most Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have endings that leave lots of room for sequels, and follow-up movies to come. But Endgame puts a nice, neat bow on its narrative, resulting in a rewarding cinematic experience. But of course, the MCU will continue onward. Which means there had to be some set-up for what comes next.

Of all the upcoming MCU films, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that receives the biggest jump-start. Some of the final moments of the latest Avengers film plant seeds of what we can expect from James Gunn‘s triumphant return to the MCU. And the potential is limitless. Spoilers follow.
