bad boys for life digital

The surprisingly good (maybe even great?) Bad Boys For Life is about to come home. The sequel is due to hit digital at the end of March, almost a full month before its Blu-ray release. This somewhat early digital release is likely meant to coincide with several other big titles that have scored early releases in the wake of the coronavirus. Movie theaters are shut down, people are stuck home, and studios are scrambling to fill the void.

Sonic the Hedgehog Box Office

Sonic the Hedgehog has gone from receiving extremely unfavorable reactions from fans to earning the biggest box office opening weekend ever for a video game movie. The Blue Blur had no problem topping the box office, speeding past Birds of Prey with a $57 million three-day weekend, and a projected $68 million for the Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day holiday weekend. But how did Birds of Prey hold up in second place? Get the rest of the box office results below. Read More »

Bad Boys for Life has been dominating the box office since arriving in theaters in the middle of January, but the ladies of Birds of Prey took Will Smith and Martin Lawrence down a peg with some DC Comics action. However, even though the movie starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn ended up Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 81% critical score, it only ended up with roughly $33.25 million, opening below the projected $45 million that Warner Bros. Pictures was hoping for.

The Rhythm Section was way off mark with its opening weekend, which broke records for the single-worst box office debut ever. After 17 years of waiting, we finally got to see the bad boys of Miami grow up with Bad Boys For Life. And it was worth the wait. Without Michael Bay at the helm, the Miami cops actually got to grow a little, have some real heart-to-heart moments, and do and say things we just don’t see in Bay’s movies. Co-directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi managed to recharge the franchise and make a sequel both modern and nostalgic.

After the success of Bad Boys for Life, another sequel is already in the works. If all goes according to plan, expect Fallah and El Arbi back to direct. While speaking with the Belgium filmmaking duo behind Black, which is what caught Will Smith and Jerry Bruckheimer‘s attention, they told us about their plan to direct one more sequel. They also told us about making the movie’s massive motorcycle chase scene, paying homage to Bay and the ’90s, and more.

weekend box office bad boys for life

Ride together, die together, blow up the box office together: Bad Boys for Life is a hit. The third entry in the action franchise exceeded expectations at the weekend box office, taking in 83% more than initially projected. But while Bad Boys had a good weekend, Dolittle did not. The Robert Downey Jr. film flopped, giving Cats distributor Universal Pictures another box office body blow.

bad boys for life review

Three things are essential to the Bad Boys franchise – or at least, they used to be. One is an often alarming cruelty – a disregard for anyone, and anything, all in the name of a near-sociopathic attempt at coolness. The second is what is commonly referred to as Bayhem – the wild, swirling, often incoherent action beats created by director Michael Bay. The third, and perhaps most essential, is the banter – and bickering – between leads Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

What makes Bad Boys for Life, the third and presumably final chapter in this series, so special is the jettisoning of the first two elements while embracing the third. Bay is no longer in the director’s chair, and the overall nastiness – which was ramped up to the nth degree in Bad Boys II – is nowhere to be found. But that interplay between Smith and Lawrence is ever-present, and endlessly entertaining.
