Paramount’s Transformers spin-off Bumblebee movie is gearing up to put the pedal to the metal/burn some rubber/leave its competition in the dust…okay, okay, I’ll stop. Director Gillian Robespierre’s Obvious Child was such a pleasant surprise for a lot of people back in 2014 that news she was reuniting with star Jenny Slate for a new movie called Landline was greeted with cheers. Amazon Studios picked up the film and has debuted the first trailer for the dramedy, which is set in 1995 and focuses on a dysfunctional family with parents played by John Turturro and Edie Falco. But even with a cast made up of industry vets, it sounds like the film’s largely unknown youngest cast member may be the one who steals the movie.

The delightful Obvious Child came seemingly out of nowhere in 2014 to win us over. In our defense, it was the first-ever feature by director Gillian Robespierre, and the first screenwriting credit for Elisabeth Holm, and star Jenny Slate hadn’t yet established herself as a movie star. But now that we’ve all seen and loved Obvious Child, there’s no chance of the gang’s next team-up flying so far under the radar.
Slate is set to star in Robespierre’s next directorial effort, Landline, to be written by Robespierre and Holm. As the title suggests, Landline is a period piece — specifically, an ensemble comedy set in 1995. John Turturro, Edie Falco, Jay Duplass, and newcomer Abby Quinn are also among the cast. Read More »
