We know that the future of Star Wars storytelling is going to be told using virtual reality, and now Lucasfilm has taken another step toward crafting a completely immersive experience that transports the user into a galaxy far, far away. They’ve teamed up with ILMxLAB and a company called The Void and have announced Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire, a new multi-sensory, hyper-reality experience that’s set to open later this year at the Disney resorts. This sounds like it could be pretty incredible.

We’re still in the midst of the Peak TV era, and while our television screens are practically bursting with a multitude of fantastic new television shows seemingly every day, one show still stands above the rest for me. I consider Breaking Bad to be a major contender for the title of the greatest television show of all time. But as much as I love it, I’m hesitant about ever seeing a revival of the series; I’d much rather see something like Better Call Saul, a spin-off set in the same universe that’s allowed to carve out its own identity.
But a virtual reality experience? That’s a different story. Now we have word that showrunner Vince Gilligan is developing a piece of VR storytelling that might continue the saga of drug kingpin Walter White and the tormented Jesse Pinkman. Read everything we know about the Breaking Bad VR experience below.

We’ve covered a handful of VR experiences here on the site, but I’ve never heard of anything quite like the new virtual reality project that Birdman and The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu has cooked up. It’s called Carne y Arena, and it’s the first VR installation to screen in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. The New York Times has an excellent breakdown of the experience, which spans three separate rooms and includes a walk-in freezer and a sand-covered floor as it gives you the perspective of migrants crossing the United States/Mexico border. Read the highlights below.

Perhaps the most fascinating prospect about the advancement of virtual reality in recent years is that it will allow us to explore some of the fictional worlds that we love so much. While this may not be as easy with some of the older films we love, new movies are creating VR experiences that go hand-in-hand with the stories that we’ll see told on the big screen. However, one software engineer decided to take it upon himself to recreate the set from one classic sci-fi movie in virtual reality.
The original Blade Runner is known for its depiction of a seedy futuristic Los Angeles that combines fictional technology with the visual style of a classic film noir. The apartment of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is one of the best examples of the film noir style and production design, and software engineer Quentin Lengele has recreated it in virtual reality so that you can walk around the apartment as if you were dropping by to give Deckard a hard time.

Even though Paramount Pictures has made it possible for Transformers to come to life on the big screen, it’s safe to assume we’ll never see alien robots that can transform into vehicles standing in front of us. However, we’ll get the next best thing thanks to the magic of new virtual reality technology.
While we were on the set of Transformers: The Last Knight (check out our set visit report right here) with a group of press up in Michigan this past summer, director Michael Bay revealed that he’s working on a Transformers VR project with IMAX and Industrial Light & Magic. So now the explosive action of Michael Bay and Transformers will be in your face closer than ever before.

In the technology world, a lot more attention is being paid to virtual reality, and some of the biggest franchises from film, television, comics and more are starting to take advantage of it. Perhaps one of the most anticipated uses of VR technology is coming with Industrial Light & Magic’s ILMxLAB projects that will be bringing franchises like Star Wars into your living room with VR technology. And today, Lucasfilm announced some cool news regarding Star Wars VR projects.
First of all, screenwriter David Goyer is teaming up with ILMxLAB for a new project that will focus on a certain iconic Sith Lord, and the company’s Trials on Tatooine VR experience will be available to try for free starting next week. Get details on both of the Star Wars VR announcements after the jump. Read More »

Virtual reality technology has been making a comeback in a big way with the Oculus VR hitting shelves along with Samsung and PlayStation creating their own devices for the immersive innovation in entertainment. Slowly but surely, the technology is starting to make its way into filmmaking as VR movies have been playing at various film festivals recently.
However, director Steven Spielberg doesn’t sound too keen on the technology making its way into cinemas and he believes it could be “dangerous” to the nature of storytelling. Read the Steven Spielberg’s remarks on virtual reality movies remarks after the jump. Read More »
