The Favourite Review

The long march through awards season continues today with the announcement of the 24th Critics Choice Awards nominations. It might seem predictable that a period film like The Favourite came out on top of the pack with 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and nominations for the three stars, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, you might be surprised that the Marvel Studios blockbuster Black Panther wasn’t far behind with 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society awards winners

It’s only been a few days since the members of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society released the nominees for their annual awards, and the winners have already been determined. However, don’t expect this to be an indication of how any of the major awards are going to go down later this season. Our editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is counted among this group, and the wide array of film critics from various backgrounds makes the results skew much further from the norm than you might expect at the Golden Globes or Oscars.

However, that actually makes the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society awards winners a little more interesting than the usual awards fare – they have awarded the adaptation of The Hate U Give Best Picture. How did the rest of the awards shake out ? Check out the full list below. Read More »

Adam McKay heart attack

Some filmmakers only metaphorically put their heart and soul into their work. When making Vice, Adam McKay did it literally. McKay recently revealed that after shooting the biopic based on the life of former Vice President and all-around monster Dick Cheney, he suffered a heart attack. Besides being potentially tragic, McKay’s heart attack was darkly ironic, due to the fact that Cheney’s many, many heart attacks are chronicled in the movie. But those very heart attacks may have helped save McKay’s life.

‘Vice’ Trailer: Bruce Willis Pisses Off a Robot

Vice trailer

Bruce Willis still makes good movies, but he tends to make a whole lot of forgettable dreck between them. It’s too early to determine which side of that line Vice, his latest movie, falls on, but if we had to guess… well, let’s just say this seems to have more in common with The Prince and Fire With Fire than Moonrise Kingdom or Looper.

Vice stars Willis as the owner of a futuristic resort in which customers use androids to play out their darkest, most decadent fantasies. But when one of those androids, played by Ambyr Childers, gets wise to what’s going on, she breaks out and tries to strike back. Thomas Jane also stars, as a cop involved in the struggle. Check out the Vice trailer after the jump.

Briefly: Bruce Willis may be bored by action movies, but he keeps making them, in part because we keep watching them. While there are loads of films selling distribution rights this week at the European Film Market, one has done better than many others, because it is a sci-fi tale with Willis in the lead.

VICE will star Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers in a story that is “set on a futuristic resort where synthetic humans serve the rich, who live out their darkest fantasies. The humanoids are reset every night by the resort’s owner Julian (Willis), but one female employee Kelly (Childers) malfunctions and retains every terrifying memory. Realizing what the tourists are doing to the staff members, she sets out to exact revenge.” So, a little Westworld, and a lot of other sci-fi films mixed together. We know roles for Willis and Childers, and so want to bet that Jane plays one of the resorts customers, possibly the one that makes Childers lose it?

Brian A. Miller (The Prince) will direct when the shoot starts next month in Alabama, from a script by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore. [Variety]

The good news for a lot of comedy fans today is that NBC renewed Community for a fourth season. There’s a catch, however. That season is a truncated 13-episode order at this point. And while EW reports the renewal, the site says that the returns of series creator Dan Harmon and actor Chevy Chase are still to be confirmed. Presumably there would be no show without Harmon, but given recent statements by Chevy Chase, perhaps there is still reason to be concerned about his return.

Still no word on Parks & Recreation, though that could arrive later this evening. But we do have promo pics from NBC’s new shows, renewal announcements for 30 Rock and Parenthood, and word on returning stars for The Office. Also after the jump:

  • Fox unveils a trailer for Fringe‘s fourth season finale
  • FX is developing Heartsick, about a female serial killer
  • AMC renews Comic Book Men and The Talking Dead
  • HBO drops new character posters for True Blood
  • VICE developing weekly newsmagazine series on HBO
