The summer 2019 Television Critics Association press tour ended with a final panel for the fourth season of The Good Place on NBC. Good Place fans were sad when Mike Schur announced at an FYC panel earlier this summer that the fourth season would be the last. The Good Place cast had a love-fest at Comic-Con with fans saying emotional goodbyes.
Many of the plans for the final season have been discussed through Schur’s final season interviews and all the panels and interviews the cast has done. However, Schur addressed one new angle on The Good Place during the TCA panel. Here’s how his goal for the show (spoiler warning for the first three seasons), and therefore the finale, changed while Schur was writing The Good Place.

It’s almost time to honor the finest achievements in television again. The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will air this fall, but before that, we need to know who has been nominated for the most coveted awards in television. Covering drama, comedy, variety, reality, animation and more, the Emmys honor the best in television and streaming, and this year is full of a wide spectrum of nominees from network, cable, and various streaming services.
The big news is Game of Thrones finished its television run with a record-setting 32 nominations this year, the most for any program in a single season, beating the previous record set by NYPD Blue. Meanwhile, on the comedy side of things, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel landed 20 nominations, and in the limited series category, Chernobyl made a big showing with 19 total nominations.

Michael Schur, the creator and showrunner of NBC’s ambitious philosophical comedy The Good Place, has never been shy about acknowledging the inspiration he found in ABC’s seminal sci-fi action drama Lost. Though the two shows, on the face of it, would seem to be wildly different, you can not only spot references to Lost in The Good Place, but Schur both consulted with Lost co-showrunner Damon Lindelof early in the run of the comedy, and Lost writer Drew Goddard has directed a handful of episodes, including the pilot.
There’s one more place in which The Good Place needs to find some inspiration from Lost, though, and hopefully soon: it’s time for The Good Place to announce its end date.
